Are screwfix ones any good .
The Screwfix stainless worm drive clips are A2 or 304 or 18/8 Stainless with 8% nickel and 18% chromium. This is not marine grade.
Marine grade is A4 or 316 or 18/8/3 and has better resistance to chloride corrosion. This is achieved by adding 3% molybdenum to the 304 mix.
I'm sure the screwfix ones are reasonable quality, but you will need to decide if they are suitable for your application.
And yet I was unable to find anything better than A2 in the two main southern chandleries.
Availability is a good reason. If you can't get them when you need them the cost is irrelevant. Both will do the job unless your boat is full of sea water so it makes very little difference. If your boat is full of sea water then you need to invest in more than 316 stainless fittings!I can't see any point in using anything other than A4 316 in a boat. The extra cost is immaterial.
And yet I was unable to find anything better than A2 in the two main southern chandleries. There are two questions here, the first is "are they marine grade?" and the answer is no, not really, but then you probably won't use them outdoors anyway. The second is "are they worse than what you'd get at the chandlery?" and that's a no too, they are identical in spec to the chandlery ones.
Of course, the third question is "are they cheaper than the chandlers?" and we get a third no. They come in packs of 10 and still cost more individually than Force4 sell them for.
A2 is absolutely fine for above the waterline. It is certainly consider to be marine grade. 316 is only vital below the waterline. hcl-clamping.co.uk list 316 stainless Jubliee clips, not cheap but if you want A4 then these seem to fit the bill
They're about 3x the price of the SeaScrew ones I linked to in post 5.
Because they're now the same price, in fact the low quality chinese is more expensive than the high quality european as per the example I gave and I keep seeing this. It used to be that cheap quality meant cheap price but something is happening. Either Chinese manufacturer costs have risen or I think more likely now that most European manufacturers have gone out of business the chinese (now selling direct from china) or European sellers of chinese can put their prices up and we're largely not noticing. Some items are now just about only available from China so they have no competition, of course they can then raise their prices. Problem for European manufacturers is if someone thinks they can start up making it here again the chinese can simply reduce the price back down and put them out of business again.I can't for the life of me understand why you're comparing low quality Chinese ones with high quality European ones. Why not compare high or low quality from both regions? The answer, of course, is that then there'd be no difference.
