Stackpack is currently held in place by mainsail footripe. I am about to fit a loose-footed main, planning to use a length of 8mm rope.

Anyone done this successfully? Any tips?

It is as easy as you would imagine. With a whipped end of the rope, you can use a spike to push it along the 'groove'. Last season I think I whipped a loop in the end and used small stuff to pull it along. That part of my stackpack is nylon type material so the rope slides along easily. All stays in place.

I read on here about someone feeding through 10mm plastic pipe with the stack pack.

I made a stackpack for a loose footed main on a previous boat. As you sugest the pack fabric was sewn around a rope for the boom slot. A short length was left open for adjustment of the clew outhaul slide , but continued beyond the end of the sail so that the clew would be in the sailbag. The stackpack/sailbag needed its own tack fastening and outhaul to keep it tensioned and the lazyjacks in place.

Mine was made (by Kemps) with sail slugs to run in the foot groove, sections left open for things like reefing lines and netting sections for drainage. Very successful.

This is how mine is fitted.

The method you describe works fine for me.

You might want to consider having a detachable clew fitting on your loose-footed sail. This would let you fit and remove the sail independently of the stackpack. My sail had a substantial clew slider taped to the sail. I replaced the tape with a shackle. I find this a great convenience at the start and end of the season. As for the rope retaining the stackpack: I'd have it permanently sewn in as per post 5.

I'm doing exactly this, but stackpack and sail were bought together, so the stackpack was built with a bolt rope in the bottom.

The instructions supplied by Jeckells are attached.

I converted my mainsail to loose footed and used a new rope to hold the stackpack; works very well and the loose footed mainsail is more efficient.
