Nick, I actually think that your flopper stoppers - unsophisticated as they were - had one big advantage, i.e. the fact that they were exploiting a better leverage position, if compared to fins placed under the hull.My entirely unscientific reasoning relates to my flopper stoppers.
Surely not as much as paravanes, but along the same principle, if you see what I mean.
In other words, for any given final result, I would expect that fins should bear a higher specific load.
That said, +1 to all your other considerations!
