Stabilizers for Blue Angel, engineering question

Bart, how did they cut that plug out of the hull? There is no centre hole (for a machine cutter) and the edge seems to have teeth marks all the way around. Did they just chain drill it (blimey!)?

I wondered the same. Finally decided that they may have bolted the non-stepped flanges so they were sandwiching the hull and then used a magdrill to ensure the axis of the bore was at 90deg to the flange.

indeed this job was done in a very "amateur" way,
they told me they used a jigsaw (broke many blades), I was'n't there at that moment,
they must have been using a drill aswell, looking at the traces on the plug,

but fortunately the shape and finish of the edges of the opening in the hull were very good, and nicely 90°
I assume one has been using a grinder and a file tool and "lots" of elbow grease,
that was confirmed to me by one of the workers

I realised that this could have been going terribely wrong.
but again, luckyly we had absolutely no issues with the shape nor size of the opening

for drilling the 8 x 20mm mounting holes, done by a friend and myself,
we made a tool, from a few plywood dished, (perfect pattern of the system flange) and a drill stand on top,
so that the positioning was perfectly accurate.

all fitted nicely without extra grinding, and a vertical gap in between the hull and flange of 1..3mm wide

I'm not sure how they have acheeved that perfect 90°
the only thing they got from me was a drawing, and this part (flange) from the system,

Slightly o/t B, but what about a "new f/b cover for BA" thread?
Not made up your mind yet? :)

could be a interesting and well needed new thread,
but as you know there is a strong wind against this plan "at home" ;-)
but wind is becoming more calm now

next step is visiting the Opacmare stand at Mets,
I believe they are the makers of the canopy gliding system,
as used by MCY, AZ, ...(remember the systems we looked at in Cannes)

and looking if this company is as cooperative like H-B, CMC, ....to a small single DIY'er.
and for this part I'm afraid not. I think they will send me to a dealer who isn't of any help to me
we chal see.

but more important decision to make soon, is if we will go to Croatia or stay in SOF next season.
this will have a big impact on what we are going to rebuild this winter/spring.
so there might come a sabatical year on the rebuild front, except for a few small finishing touches.

but as you know, my plans can alway's change quickly :)

LOL, yeah, I see what you mean... :)

Re. Opacmare, just FYI, after I bought my boat I've been able to meet one of their engineers in Rivalta, not far from Turin.
At that time, they just began building hi/low platforms, and I considered it a while, before deciding to stick to a hydraulic passerelle which could be used also as a crane.
Anyway, not only he kindly gave me all the technical details necessary for my evaluations, but he also explained that for this sort of semi-custom equipments, they could supply factory direct.
I would expect a retractable top to fall in the same semi-custom category (as opposed to passerelles and cranes), but their commercial policy might well have changed in the meantime, I'm not sure (I'm talking of 10 yrs ago).

That aside, if you decide to move to the Adriatic for 2014 season, I trust that you won't miss the opportunity to spend at least a few days in S Sardinia along the route!
The last time you've been here with your diving mates, we just scratched the surface of the many great anchoring spots which are available in the area, and it would be a great pleasure to have you around with BA, and show you some others.
Not to mention taste some fresh fish, together with not so fresh but very tasty nonetheless wines...
...after all, you will need some quality meals, before heading to Croatia. :D :D :D
