Spray painted hulls

Thanks for that. It's a friends boat that was sprayed blue only 3/4 years ago, it was a professional job and looks as good as gelcoat, so I think it might have been done with Awlgrip. However, a few years of doing nothing to it has left it faded in a few places as well as a few scratches. I believe several coats were applied, possibly a dozen, so he is hoping a light compounding will bring it back.

If the scratches "disappear" when wet, they're probably shallow enough to buff out. Yes, you can buff most paints (not sure about Awlgrip), but like a car, you will remove some thickness while doing it, so there's only a finite number of buffings you can give them before you go through to the pirmer.

Awlgrip has it's own set of rules to follow, if indeed it is Awlgrip and depending on which one was applied.

If it was applied correctly then it should not have failed so early, Awlgrip has great UV inhibitors and has good resistance to scratching, but even Awlgrip has to be subject to correct cleaning techniques.

It can be corrected, but it's not as easy as gel coat, I could make suggestions but it would be a guess at which compounds, paired with correct pad would work the best without testing.

Any pics to tease?

Quite possible it's not Awlgrip, this may account for the premature failing, It's applied quite heavy with a wide nozzle, so usually an orange peel effect present.

Whatever it is I will find out, def not orange peel effect, it looks almost like gel coat.
It hasn't exactly failed, just a few unsightly scuff marks and scratches that don't seem to wash out.

Awlgrip poly is as hard as old boots, much harder than gelcoat.
their acrylic 2000 is quite soft & i would not recommend it but it can be buffed-up
