Spot the boat is no more!

One point I forgot to make in my previous post (the main point I was going to make)was that my first post, really was applying my thoughts about STB. Yes, there is a much bigger issue about how effective/appropriate using models (usually carefully picked, attractive models to entice magazine readers, for instance) is in advertising. However, STB isn't about selling boats. Sure the images tend to come from adverts, but these aren't the only source... especially on a forum operated by a publishing company who has under their belt, many boat related magazines.

Like I say though, I will question my own pre-conceptions ideas, regardless of which side of the fence they're already on... I just need to be appropriately convinced.

Good luck trying to convince those on here to change their attitudes. They are more set in their ways than the tides that surround them... FWIW I get your point of view. This place is just way old fashioned, and also can see it going eventually as Robin can in post #9. I really can't see how this forum adds any value to Time other than for space to show adverts, but if that out weighs the cost of the admin to keep this site from falling into anarchy I've no idea why they bother keeping it.

So if we are old fashioned which is the demographic/socioeconomic group that is obsessed with Kim Kardashians Ass and sending each other explicit images on Snapchat?

If Time dropped the forum I suspect that there would be a queue of interested parties; of course the forum has far greater value than it's current advertising revenue.

I agree that some posters on this thread appear to be far removed for the realities of the real world; I guess that's the way with polarised, rhetorical argument.

Most young people these days are far more tolerant and respectful of each other than many on this site are...

I don't actually know of another mainstream forum that is as bad as this place gets.

I read a magazine about boats, I came originally learn and read about boat related stuff. But click new posts and of the 25 posts (just done so now) over 50% are nothing to do with boats. If I wanted to read about politics (non boat) court cases, Christmas calendars, Sky TV or all the other nonsense I'd do that else where.

I'd be more than happy for Time to totally close the Lounge the site would be a better place with out it.

If only they were as tolerant and respectful to their parents:D

Bye then

Deleted User is that statement wrong? You know as well as anyone how so many people just like to cause trouble here. You are one of the contributors who I do follow/trust actually. Your boat knowledge along with a few others is very interesting. Doesn't mean I always agree, but doesn't make your experiences any less valid.

Gee you're embarassing me now:o Actually I do think you're wrong. Internet forums do tend to bring out the worst in people and the Lounge was always intended to be a place where you could engage in lively non-boaty banter and argument of the type you couldn't engage in on the other specialised ybw forums. After all, it was called the Lounge because it was supposed to be like a pub! Then you've got the fact that boat owners tend to have had some success in a professional or business lives and some may be fairly opinionated as a result. Throw in the fact that we're all pissed off because it's the end of the boating season and all we can see is months of cold and damp but with the boating bills still rolling in and the fact that Christmas is coming up which most of us dread and you've got a recipe for an internet bunfight. I've met quite a few forumites over the years and in the main they are delightful people and often very different from their apparent internet persona so I don't think that the Lounge or any other of the ybw forums is actually a true reflection of how most of the contributors are in real life. I think the answer is not to take other forumites or indeed yourself too seriously

Oh so we had all the mod cons versus you guys....Will have to pop on to Alliance next time we are up. Shame they haven't got a good old proper O' Boat there it would be good to have a look round one for old times sake.

Ocelot is a museum piece open to visitors in Chatham, but I'm not sure if she's just an "O" or refitted to a "Super O", Opportune was upgraded to Super O, IIRC they added 8' to her length but I could be misinformed, it was along time ago.

The world moves on.
There will always be those who are uncomfortable with change and feel the need to excoriate those who are brave enough to recommend it.
Well done saraband. :)

we get to remind you of this next time you bleat on about sterndrives?

Time Inc were posting semi clad ladyees & forumites could not,so double standards were suggested.
See #99

The moderators have decided to draw a line in the sand at nudity. Bikinis are fine, topless or bottomless is not. I don't think that's double standards as we have always applied this rule to STB. The moderators have simpy extened it to include the Lounge.

I realise that this won't keep everyone happy but it's a pretty easy guideline for everyone to follow, so that's the bottom line. Or should that be top line?

Fair enough but what about topless blokes?;)

This, Time Incs own publication leaves me puzzled following your statement.

Agree entirely with that and indeed, that's the big difference when compared (as earlier) with those infamous 'Motor Industry' calendars of yesteryear. I've seen far more flesh on the beach in the summer and running a nightclub back in the 80's/90's than STB.

That site isn't part of these forums, so how is it relevant? Visitors to that site probably expect what they find...

Can't argue with any of that.

Of course it's relevant, Time Inc are saying semi clad models are unacceptable whilst blatantly promoting the very same in one of their own publications. It was posted elsewhere that it is a lifestyle goal which is being promoted, lovely sunny weather, boating etc. I frequently show SWMBO pictures of women in bikinis on beautiful boats in MBY or SuperYacht World asking her if she could see herself in that situation. I don't say 'I'm just popping out to have sex with the woman in this picture because she's offering it on a plate.'

This decision isn't throwing the baby out with the bath water, it's throwing the siblings out as well.

It's not relevant since two separate publications from the same company may be targetted at different markets and have very different standards. To try and illustrate the point, a television production company may produce some material with "adult content", but this does not preclude them from producing other material aimed at children (obviously without the adult content).
