Splicing anchorplait to chain

Boat currently has 30m of chain spliced to a piddly 10m of old looking rope.

I'm about to order a further 20m of chain and 50m of rope, so I'll have 50m of chain plus 50m rope. The current 10m is going in the bin as it's old.

Problem is, I was looking at getting the chain and rope from somewhere like JimmyGreen, but it turns out they're pretty expensive. I can get the piece of chain and length of rope cheaper from alternative sources.

My query is this - How easy is it to splice the rope onto the chain? I have no idea how it's done.

Sorry Vic, but I didn't see any mention of Anchorplait in the OP's posting

That'll be my fault, I didn't realise "anchorplait" is a registered name used by JimmyGreen. I initially typed out the post using that instead of "rope", and then changed it. However, forgot to change the title!

It's just normal anchor suitable rope that I'll be getting.
 
So are you going to use 3 strand rope - very easy, or 8 strand rope - a tad harder? There are plenty of instructional video around on both splices.

Either way, finish the splice with whipping and serve with some tared string, don't use use shrink wrap as it looks **** and it's not very seaman like.

Nice to see somebody wanting to learn how to splice, rather than asking who they should pay to do it for them!

Standard 3 strand nylon stuff. I've watched that YouTube video Jaba posted. Doesn't look too complex, if a little fiddly!
Learn how to splice? I figure it's easy compared to learning how to use the sextant I got for my birthday. :p
 
Octoplait is much easier to handle than 3-strand and flakes nicely into the anchor locker. It's more expensive and slightly more tricky to splice but worth it IMO.
Just noticed that you are planning to use 3-strand - it's up to you - you don't have to buy it from Jimmy.
 
3 strand nylon is liable to harden with use.
anchorplait or similar is far superior & very easy to splice to chain, even i can do it

Too late about the rope! Already bought the 3 strand stuff!

I very much doubt the rope will be used all that often, seeing as I'll have 50m of chain. I guess I'll just have to manually tidy it up in the anchor locker. :D
 
If I may ask a related question, is it acceptable to bowline the rope to the chain?

OK, the knot wouldn't work with a windlass, but I've seen posts where people want to extend their chain or rope in certain circumstances, and a splice would then be a major inconvenience. That is why I have knotted my chain and rope together - but I've not yet had to let the warp out beyond the chain anyway. If knots are bad, would it be better to splice the rope to a shackle and then shackle the various bits together.

Yes, I'm new to all this. I've only stopped for lunch so far!

Well a bowline will reduce the strength of the rope up to 50%, so I personally would not use it on an anchor chain. If you want to attach with a bend then there is the Anchor Bend, similar to a two round turns & two half hitches but you pass the standing end behind both turns.

I'd stay with a splice if I was you, two good books for you all:

If you are going to keep the rope attached to the chain then I would splice it. If you want to keep the warp separately then splice a hard eye into the end and have a decent sized shackle available and greased up ready to go. I've used both systems over the years but prefer the rope/chain splice.
 
Thanks for those comments. I seem to be causing some thread drift, but I must ask for some supplementary info.

The anchor warp that came with my boat was 20m chain and 30m octoplait spliced together over a number of chain links (as shown on the Jimmy Green website). However, the chain was quite rusted, so I bought new lengths of chain and plait - fully intending to splice them together. The old warp .... I was going to cut out the rusted bits and join with those Crosby mending links - and keep it in the cockpit locker for a spare/kedge/lunch hook (replacing the current smaller chain/rope warp). Then I saw the posts about keeping a longer rope or chain to extend the main warp when required (deeper/rougher conditions). I also saw alternative chain to rope splices just through a single link (essentially like the hardeye suggested by alahol2). Consequently I have just tied the rope on while I think about it (probably should have used the anchor bend - but I'm so used to using bowlines for making loops at the ends of ropes).

As I say, I have only anchored briefly so far, and not needed to let the warp out beyond the chain (boat only draws 0.7m with keel up).

So what do forum-ites do if they want a longer warp (e.g. for a Channel Island trip)? Shackle in more chain (e.g. at the anchor end), or join on more rope at the boat end? Or do you all have huge lengths of warp in the first place? I rather got the impression that shackles in anchor chain were not approved of - even tested/graded ones, though I don't know it that is for strength reasons, or because of windlass problems (I don't have one!).

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated
 
as an East Coaster we normally use 20m x 8m/m chain with 30m of octoplait slpiced to it.
las summer (:rolleyes:) we went C I & North Brittany, so East Coast gear removed & 60m x 8 m/m chain + 50m octoplait spliced together, the first time we used it it was superb, in the mud of the River Orwell upon our return trip.We never anchored whilst away.
That gear is now in my shed as 60m of chain puts her head down by 50m/m
