What do you mean by 16 braid? Is this a braid on braid or similar? What diameter line? There are several guides to splicing - which line is it exactly? Do you know the manufacturer?
Hadn't heard of that one but seems to be a variation of a half blood-knot which fishermen use. That always worked for me but in fishing line there is always a risk of a bit of slipping so I would tie a thumb not in the bitter end as I would again if using it to secure a shackle
Don't know what the experts would say but my method was NOT to splice but to SEW. Turned braid around thimble about 8cm and then stitched together.(Used strong uv stabilised thread)
This was with spectra speed. (main halyard) Has been three seasons of racing and still as good as new. Have since used same on mainsheet and traveller sheets in usacore and double braid polyester. All take lots of pressure. Was quick and easy to do!! The test that you have stitched through enough times is that it becomes very difficult to get the needle through the rope. It really stiffens up.
Is much easier than a splice and is DIY (ie cheap!!!) and is almost as neat!
Even with the right tools it's quite hard work to make an eye in braid. Might be easiest to leave it to a rigger. If you really want to have a go, sewing an eye works well. Sewing the tail of sailorman's stevedore's knot, for example, would make it very secure.
By the way, I wonder how many people on here know the traditional difference between a docker and a stevedore?
It has the advantage of being secure, neat and the end of the rope finishes up alongside the standing part, so that it can be whipped or sewn for a belt and braces result.
HWMBO has the splicing needles and fids for doing all sorts of ropes. When he wants decorative results then he uses them. For working results that are much easier to do, he uses sailmakers thread pre-waxed and stitches through the two parts of rope that form the eye. He then after tieing of the stitched parts, whips over the top with same thread and finishes of by a tiny drop of superglue on the small knot that finished it.
I like the look of that halyard knot, sort stevedores knot with a difference, my missus will be pleased, it will enable me to finish the halyard and get it back out to the garage where it belongs.
