How easy is it to retrofit spinnaker rigging to a Oceanis 43? The cost of factory fitting is £740 for the rigging or £1740 for the rigging and the pole (must be some pole /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif)
yup be around 4.5 metres long.... well your J dimesnsion.... from memory i paid about 800 for a selden pole a few years ago. so i guess not too far out.
how easy... well i guess the answer is are you diy skills up to it....
- riviting the track to the mast.
- pulley in the mast about third way up for your uphaul.
- couple of cleats lead aft for the up and down haul.
- u shaped bracket in the deck at the bow with pulley for down haul...
- couple of cleats in the mast to control the the pole height...
- extra winches
about a weekends work for 2 novices to work out /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
For sure Benny has a heavvy hand in pricing optionals (IMHO).
The most tedious thing is to rig halyard, up and down controle for the pole, IF the mast is not aready rigged.
Sheet and guy You can buy at a good chandler, with a couple of Gibbs-type shackles.
Pole is just an 8 cm diam. aluminum tube plus terminals: in 2007 was 270 euros in Italy for a 393.
Another thing is how easy it is to fix the padeyes for the downhaul over the foredeck (Benny likes to have two on deck) and for the pulleys at the stern.
Finally I suggest to ook at the Spinlock sellf-opening pulleys (BRS series), as they allow you to save on a pair of winches.
On my 393 I did: rivet 5 meters of rail (in order to carry the pole hanging from the mast and not laid on deck) with a car, fix a pulley at masthead, order the pole from Benny. Padeyes came with the boat.
Probably easiest to go for factory-fit on the rigging, mast track, fitting of blocks etc at that price. I'd also be wary that they might claim drilling the holes in the deck to fit blocks would invalidate their warranty. Check the small print.
The pole, on the other hand, you could probably get cheaper. Either buy the end fittings and get your own aluminuim or carbon-fibre tube, or buy a second-hand pole.
In the Owner's Manual (Thank You, RCD!) is clearly described (at last for 393s) where padeyes are to be fixed and You can find the reinforced underdeck.
Thanks all - I don't mind most of the DIY bits and will do most things on the boat however given the major holes that I could be drilling in the baot I think it would be better to factory fit the running gear.
The pole looks like something we could either fabricate or get later, any ideas where to get the ends?
