Can anyone help please? I have a 'Echo Pilot' depth/speed log of unknown age, already fitted in my boat when I bought it and was working fine. However, after a couple of months of non use it stopped working. Tried the paddle wheel when I anti fouled the underside and this was spinning freely.Boat now back in water and in use, but minus speed log. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, Scorch.

Suggest that it's the wire between the paddle wheel and the instrument. If, as is likely, you have had some sea water in the bilges which has come in contact with the wire then you only need a slight pin prick in the outer sheath and water will penetrate to turn the wire brittle and black and it will eventually break.
...or maybe not!

Now, I had the same problem with a B&G log, Peters spent weeks trying to find what was wrong, tracing all the wires back to the gauges (a massive job) before decideing that the instrument Display was at fault.
Hope you have better luck

Ah yes that's the problem. I would hate to influence you into cutting the wire and then to find it's ok.
I guess that the propellor gives some sort of magnetic pulse to a coil. Which means that the coil will have some resistance. So if you unplug from the instrument, put an ohm meter across the two wires you should read some kind of resistance. If you do then your wire is intact, if not I still hessitate to say replace the wire.
