Thank you very much for this response. Some more information on MEDNET would be helpful e.g. how does it operate and what sort of information does it provide?
Yes, I would welcome your pilotage notes which you can e-mail to me at ray.gorringe@kier.co.uk.
Although starting from the East coast in May03 my passage plan also takes in La Rochelle and so your notes will be perticularly helpful. After Spain we intend to go on eastwards to Turkey and Greece, despite the paperwork problems that have been well debated in these pages.
Have a good Christmas and New Year.

For my sins I run MedNet on behalf of the Mediterranean Section of the Cruising Association. The following extract from the Welcome Message sent to all new members gives a good idea of what it is all about:

***************************************************************************************

Welcome to MedNet!

MedNet is a private e-mailing list exclusively for members of the Mediterranean Section of the Cruising Association. It keeps members informed of current news from the Section and enables them to help one another by posting notices and by answering one another's questions.

HOW MEDNET WORKS

As 'MedNet Manager' I maintain a list of the e-mail addresses of participating members on a host server. E-mail messages posted to the server by any one member are automatically forwarded to all the other members on the list.

APPROVED USES OF MEDNET

A. THE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION by the Section Secretary.

B. THE POSTING OF NOTICES by any one member for the benefit of others, e.g. new information about the imposition of the Cruising Tax in Greece.

C. THE POSING OF QUESTION(S) by any one member inviting a response from others e.g. "Can any member tell me who sells cheap flights back from Monastir?" or "Are any fellow members thinking of cruising to Croatia next year?"

**************************************************************************************

Ther are currently 198 members in MedNet. Questions posed through the system now tap into a huge wealth of accumulated experience on matters relating to cruising in general and the Mediterranean in particular. Members have frequently received 15 or more high-quality answers to questions they have posed, thus avoiding the necessity to re-invent the wheel yet again. And the benefits don’t stop there. Members sending replies do so readily and willingly and get a real ‘buzz’ from knowing that they have been able to help.

Does the Cruising Association operate equally successful email lists for non Med sailing topics or is Mednet the one that took off?

The Baltic Section have a similar system and there is an ever-increasing amount of information being made available to all members electronically. However, we can always do with new members with an interest and/or expertise in electronic communication to help us expand the service so why not come and join us?
