Spain shoots at jet skiers.... ?

No smuggling? All done in Spain? Oh, do wake up you dimwit!

Have you ever heard so much pie-in-the-sky sh!t in your life?

This kind of delusion is exactly why Gib's credibility is so low, and so totally self-imposed.

Pathetic in it's naiivety! Utterly pathetic.

You should join your chums, get a number one haircut, get a few tattoos, get a lobster sunburn :D and then spend all day yelling like you do, and swilling pint after pint. :D

Thank you for your honest reply VO5 but there was never any implication on my part that you were personally involved in smuggling. What I was saying in the short time I was there I had was aware that the Gibraltarians also smuggled tobacco out to Spain and I cannot understand how someone who has lived there so long does not believe or know it goes on.. I also totally agree with you about the Brits...

When you export alcohol or cars or anything you need export licenses, paperwork and transport.

We live in a modern world.

We don't live in the 17th century when smuggling casks of Brandy or bundles of Tobacco were slipped across frontiers using mules.

Nowadays everything is known and the authorities have every means of knowing and every means of controlling.

So ?

VO5, You are in the Gibraltar that is on earth aren't you? Am I missing something here or is it you that has something missing?

my homeland.

Exactly. Gib is your homeland. Not Britain.

Gib contributes diddly squat to the country which it not only expects defense from, but also uses to continually defy its neighbour rather than try to find an accomodation with. Its continual hiding behind the apron strings of the Uk will eventually mean that this country loses both interest and patience.

Enough said on education, they pay their way. Apply for a place in Jersey uni anyone? Same as somewhere near the Solomon Islands, need to ask eldest daughter exactly where but government paid if grades were up to it. So yes, their places are paid by the Gibraltar government.

Most of my friends there are bi-lingual and tend to switch regularly, they are more than able to hold a conversation in either language. I thank them for improving my faltering Spanish.

Smuggling? Hmm, there's a wide history to read and it's interesting but it's history. Look to the border and certain scrotes known and unknown sailing off and returning a couple of days later, the days of hiding shipments in caves are over.

Perhaps I am over enthusiastic but that said I had the luxury of actually being in Gibraltar for albeit just 13 months over 2 years :)

You again Teapot ?

The organised gangs that do this are outside Gibraltar. Our Royal Gibraltar Police is very strict. One is not allowed to purchase more than three cartons of 200 cigarettes each at anyone time.

If you want to seriously investigate smuggling and wrongdoing you ought to spend some time in the Spanish coast region all the way up to Malaga.

You would not find it at all difficult to make yourself understood there, despite not speaking or understanding Spanish, because the biggest crooks apart from the Russian Mafia, are your very own countrymen, who operate in really serious gangs, and known to everybody as denizens of "The Costa Del Crime":D

You will not have any difficulty in identifying their watering holes. You will see they stick out like sore thumbs, wearing garish clothing, tattoos, sunburnt like lobsters, yelling and swearing, and swilling beer endlessly. Let us know how you get on, but do be careful.:)

I have knowledge that smuggling occurs. But I have yet to see Gibraltarians dedicated to it. The truly dedicated are the Spaniards. And in the Costa Del Crime the British Hooligan Element that I have described also lend them a hand, or so I am told, because they spend an awful lot of time at their Little Britain pubs and bars, ideal for all sorts of "businesses".:D

You have a rather outdated image of those behind the smuggling.

Try 'well dressed businessmen dining in the finest restaurants and living in luxurious villas in Estepona, Cabo Pino and Mijas(to name a few) living the life of luxury' and you will be getting warm.

Also look a little closer to home and you'll find(some) the money men behind these schemes/scams own businesses in Gib.

Those you describe are toytown 'gangstas' playin at it, not the real big boys.

I have some spare minutes.

You are a prat really, Teapot.

What accommodation ?

They want us to give up our home. They want to rule over us. They expect to get their paws on our wealth. The expect us to give up our nationality. They expect us to bury our identity. What are you rambling about now Teapot ?

Hoo are you anyway ?

I wouldn't know. I make a point of not fraternising with undesireables.
Before a stranger is admitted to my circle serious vetting is the norm.

Listening to your jingoistic rambles convinces me that we should just let the Spaniards have the place. It contributes nothing to the UK.

I had an interruption that is why there has been a lull in my replies.

You remember how I recounted how this hooligan at the traffic lights that yelled "Feck Off !" to me the other day and I got out of my vehicle to challenge him and the police pounced immediately and he became abusive to them as well and the clapped him in handcuffs and put him in the van ?

Well, I have just heard the outcome.

As he was on the way to the frontier, they just drove him there, reunited him with his brats, and made sure he crossed it.

I am pleased, not because he left, but because it is cheaper to the public purse, which is my concern.

The Royal Gibraltar Police is the Oldest British Police Force outside the United Kingdom, formed I think 2 years after Scotland Yard, and then, just like all of us Gibraltarians, because we have a very long experience of dealing with drunken sailors, aggressive soldiers, and so on, know exactly how to spot and deal with people who come here and don't behave, efficiently and quickly.;)

Here is a very funny and entertaining letter I have just seen published in our local press, but dead accurate nonetheless....

Old and bad habits

Dear Sir

What an unthinkable prospect and the greatest threat to democracy and world peace if Gibraltar were ever to pass into Spanish hands!

In the two World Wars Spain remained neutral, and in the last it was only because Spanish military officers and others were bribed by M16 (to the tune of $200m dollars in today’s value), that Spain was kept from allying itself to the Germans. Perhaps unwittingly the world owes Spain a debt!

So I suppose it could be said that Spain’s greatest contribution to world peace was that their officials were open to bribery. Great thing for a nation to be proud of!

It does not bear thinking about if the Germans had made a better offer.

But old and bad habits die hard as their allegedly corrupt politicians (as reported daily in the Spanish media) bleed British and other EU taxpayers dry, and share the “windfalls” from Europe amongst themselves, whilst Europeans suffer enormous cuts to services.

Ironic that the UK is in a way funding Spain’s “cold war” against Gibraltar with the millions the UK sends to the EU to help rescue the Spanish economy, although after the jet ski incident not so cold war.

A law unto themselves with an absolute disdain and disrespect of international law and a penchant for reneging on treaties when they have drawn the benefits.

Can Spain ever be relied upon as a NATO ally and European partner?

However for the moment we can rest assured that they are not an immediate threat to anyone as the submarines they have designed do not float.

Yours faithfully
Isabella Caruana

Ironic that a Gibraltarian is complaining about how much the UK sends to the EU when Gibraltar makes no contribution to that money.
It certainly claims more than its share of EU grants though.
