Spain shoots at jet skiers.... ?

Ironic that a Gibraltarian is complaining about how much the UK sends to the EU when Gibraltar makes no contribution to that money.
It certainly claims more than its share of EU grants though.

You ought to lay off the sauce Teapot before you post silly statements.
I will rephrase it correctly for you:~

It is appropriate that a Gibraltarian in a democratic system be allowed to express an opinion in the form of an observation as laid out in a letter to a local newspaper, pointing out the irony of the UK being obligated to making a contribution to the EU of £65, 000, 000 daily as a sacrifice to itself and its people for it to fall into the hands of corrupt politicians in another country, which persistently does harm to UK interests.
Spain certainly claims more than its share of EU grants.
Gibraltar claims nothing.

Rubbish.
http://www.eufunding.gi/bene_erdf.html for starters. There will be more.

How much does Gib pay into the EU? Certainly nothing via the UK contribution and I would hazard a guess that it is nothing/precious little on its own account.

.......But you don't like it when, in a democaracy, others express opinions which are critical of Gib's lack of contribution to the outside world.

You talk rubbish again, Teapot.
Look under frequently asked questions as to whether the Government of Gibraltar contributes and the reply is affirmative showing the GOG contribution is the equivalent of the EU figure.
Again, you attempt to label us spongers.
I wonder what you will accuse us of next, not content with your diatribe till now.

You tell us that Gib claims nothing from EU and, when that is shown to be nonsense, you come up with that pathetic excuse.........If you had bothered to look into it, rather than come up with your knee jerk reactions, you would realise that match funding is a common requirement for many EU funded projects. Or do you resent it that the EU does not fund the whole thing, lock stock and barrel?

As I said. Gib claims EU money. Your silly assertion that it claims nothing was rubbish.

You still haven't been able to show that Gib contributes anything to EU funds.

It does in a roundabout way, ................many lighters are sold in Spain to those that have smuggled 100's of cigarettes across the border.

VO5,
Rather than being tied to the UK's apron strings or being part of Spain wouldn't you rather be your own country independent of any help. You could then decide exactly how you want the country to run and function. You could even drive your RR on the other side of the road like they do in the UK to confuse the Spanish.
You could then deal with the incursions yourself rather than writing to the PM.

What an entertaining thread.
My previous contributions were simply to wind-up, but i note, with mirth, that much petrol has been chucked on the fire since.
Back to the initial post though; the reason the UK has not gone to war over this disgraceful incident is that we simply do not have the military capacity to win. The same applies to any re-invasion of the Falklands.
Aircraft carriers with no aircraft; leaking, unusable bunkering facilities onshore in Gib'; pink-fluffy initial training regimes for our military; reduction of the size of the army; et al all contribute to our pursuit of becoming a third world nation.
Why do we deliver overseas aid to India when they have a space programme?

I rather suspect that the UK would want to keep Gibraltar as a dependency because of its strategic importance. When all is said and done, it does control the entrance to the Mediteranean.

There is no strategic importance now as there once was when it could be easily protected and its guns could cover the entrance... all that is needed now are four small baton rounds to blow it out the water...hang on a minute, was the Spanish really shooting at the jet skier?

North Africa?

Wasn't Libya a good example of Gib's usefulness?

Sorry to disappoint you. Here we drive on the right. We do not intend to change that either.
