My daughter is in the Azores and needs a place to leave her boat for a few months over the winter. Anybody able to advise suitable places in Spain/Portugal that would not be too expensive. Thank you . Brian

I have just asked the same question on Scuttlebutt and received two very good suggestions.... Vivero and Villagarcia.

Look on Scuttlebutt, my question was entitled "Leaving the boat in Iberia".

Paul.

Have you any more information? Does she want to leave it in north Spain/Portugal or in the South? In or out of the water?

Regards,

Stephen.

Hi Stephen probably out of the water. No too fussy about north or south. Cheap and secure with access to the Uk and advantage. Thanks
Brian

1. Connections with England. Iberia flies daily from Santiago de Compostela to Heathrow and Ryanair to Stansted.
There are daily flights from Oporto and Lisbon to England. Google for details or check one of the sites for cheap flights, such as www. wegolo.com.
2. Where to leave the boat. Villagarcia is a good choice since it has a railroad connection with Santiago. Other marinas in Galicia are: Portosin, about 30 km W. of Santiago in the Ria de Muros y Noia, Camarinas, about 80 kilometer W. of La Coruna, La Coruna, Mino, Bayona, Vigo and a few more. Although I don't have up to date prices, I guess that Camarinas is the cheapest. Mino, Bayona and La Coruna will be expensive (at least for spanish standards, probably cheap compared to England). Going from Camarinas to Santiago will probably require a bus to Coruna and then train or bus to Santiago. There is a bus from Coruna to Santiago airport a couple of times (2 or 3) per day. This bus leaves from the hotel Atlantico, NOT from the busstation. There are frequent busses from the Santiago busstation to the airport.
There are also ferry-connections between Spain and England, leaving from Santander and Bilbao (check to be sure). This would require to leave the ship near one of these ports. I estimate Santander to be about 500 km E of Coruna and Bilbao 600. Quite a way further east.
Vivero does not have a rail-connection to Santiago. There is a narrow-gauge railroad along the N-coast of Spain, starting in Ferrol and going, I think, to San Sebastian. Going from Vivero to Santiago would require going first to Ferrol with this narrow-gauge railroad and then taking the "normal" train from Ferrol to Santiago. I doubt if there is a direct connection and think it requires a change of trains in Coruna. Busses in Spain are good and go rather frequent. That's by far the best way to go from Vivero to Santiago.
Good luck in finding a nice place. Henk

On the Portugese coast, there's Cascais (30 mins by train to Lisbon) or, on the Algarve, Lagos, Villamoura and Portimao - all within reach of the airport at Faro. Further afield, Rota and Puerto Sherry in the bay of Cádiz (30 mins to the airport in Jerez that has Ryanair flights to Standstead).

Regards,

Stephen.

Hi,

I seem to remember that Bayona was quite cheap, I stayed there for one night on my way home, I also stayed a night in Cascais, which from memory was quite expensive.

I also used a swinging mooring in Coruna, but make sure that you do not use your own anchor. The bottom is very dirty and I have seen quite a number of times a diver going down to clear a fouled anchor.
