I've finally managed to get an internet connection in the Maybush, Walderingfield. The weather sites are looking ok, ranging from 9-17knots NE. Metoffice is saying NE 4-5, slight, so hopefully it should be a bit more docile that the trip into the Deben.

NE is not ideal, but I should be fine. I've done loads of mods to the boat over the last two days so I'm hoping the TP will work now.... if not, a friends' dad gave me a Platimo Navik last night. Was sat in his garage and destined to never be used. I loaded it into my kayak and shipped it back to the boat. I won't be using that for a while though since I need to get a frame made up for it. Sets me up nicely for the jester though. Big grin!

Will I be ok getting into Southwold in a NE 5?

Oh, rather kindly, the dinghy safety boat gave me a lift ashore when I arrived here. Juxtaposing that good deed, I asked explained to a chap in the club that my boat was on a buoy, and although I'm not a member, would it be ok to use the showers? Apparently at that moment I turned into some sort of terrorist pedophile mass murderering MP with a moat, and was almost with a hint of politeness told to get lost.

Apparently visiting yachtsmen are welcome, except if they want to use the facilities. Oh well.

Looking forward to getting under way again. I need a pleasant sail to get the entrance out of my system.

Have a good trip .. Southwold Harbour is fun if its blowing .. If the tide is ebbing and the wind is from the east then you get a standing wave in the harbour entrance which usually results in a surf in .. Last time we did it SWMBO was at the helm .. As she said afterwards @£$%$$@££$@%@ Etc .. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif .. The seas get a bit rough just round the corner from the light house so in some ways you are better off out to sea .. You also miss all the lobster pots that are not very well marked .. The sailing club is open on Sunday till about 4pm .. Sometimes later .. Use the pub for toilet etc .. Monday club open at 7pm ?? so showers will be open .. Have a good trip .. Sand bar on the right of the staboard side of the entrance so middle to port .. Hard to starboard at the knuckle and follow the wall along under the lifeboat station .. You will see one of the bollards on top of the wall pained a different colour at this point head out to the centre of the river .. Sailing Club and HM about 1/2 nm up on the starboard bank .. Sailing Club pontoon just before HM office .. Chandlers walk down the road towards the sea entrance .. Many a happy day there .. Lots of friends and member of sailing club ..

PS .. Dont look back as you surf in .. ITS NOT A PRETTY SIGHT ..

PPS SWMBO Says It can be just as bad getting out as getting in .. Makes the Deben look easy ..

Nathan, if you are asking this question are you sure you want to be doing it? All well and good to be wanting to make progress but no point breaking something in the process!

In East Coast Pilot it says 'Do not attempt an entrance during strong E or NE winds, especially against the tide'. Strong winds = F6.

East Coast Bernie went in a couple of weeks ago and posted on here Southwold Thread . Might be worth a call to HM VHF 12 (Southwold Port Radio) or phone 01502 724712. If it looks too nasty Lowestoft is 'only' another 10 miles up the coast but that too is 'Do not attempt an entrance during strong E or NE winds'

The Ore and Alde are nice!

Oh Bugger! And there was me hoping for a nice easy leg this time.

I'll probably arrive, or hang around, for the flood in that case. Can I get in at all states of tide?

If your desperate you can get in but its not very nice thats if its blowing .. If it really is bad you are better off with Lowestoft .. Not that much further .. You can radio the HM and ask advice .. LW Tomorrow is 10.17 am HW 16.36 so if you go during the day you will have wind with the tide but you will be against the tide all the way /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
You will get in anytime upto 17.00 but if your later you will have the ebb .. Sunrise is about 04.00 so if you head off about 03.00 you will be able to see your way out the Deben and get about 6 hours of favourable tide arrive anytime after 10.30 .. Sailing club will be open and so will the showers .. Food at the pub is good but rather expensive .. Red Bull is probably the best in the town .. Hope that all helps .. Have a good trip .. Early night me thinks ..

0300???? Why, why would you suggest that!?

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think I'll get up at 0300 and leave as soon as I'm ready. Probably about 0330/45. I've moved the TP right back on the tiller, so Im hoping it's gong to work this time. Sea state was forecast as slight, thank 'eck, so it should be good testing conditions.

I'd better finish off stowing crap on the boat I guess. I hate this bit. Between now and when I set off I get a bit uneasy, but as soon as I untie from the buoy, I'm all happy. Bit weird really.

Say Hi to Sea Mist II she is on a mooring directly opposite the Ramsholt .. So you will pass her on the way down .. ( Its the PINK pub on your right as you go down river )

Shame the mother in law is coming for lunch otherwise I could have taken your lines when you arrived!

Safe trip.

Cheers Peter. Can the mother in law not handle lines then? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Oh I forgot .. Southwold is usually rafted out so it could be fun .. No mooring bouys on the river so the only place is the town quay ..

haha, it sounds even better!

I might, if I make a good run in the morning, carry on to Lowestoft. My only concern is if I get weathered in, and it's not looking good, it's going to cost a mint to keep Kudu in the marina. I might, afterall, be popping into the broads in that case.

If I do that and anybody fancies meeting up, I'd be delighted for the company.

I think you will enjoy it very much.

Last time I went I was on my own. Unfortunately, no one was there for me to raft up against. I struggled to catch hold of anything, even with my shepherd's crook boat hook could not grab hold of the quay.

Went round again and shouted out to some holiday maker's looking on for a hand. About 20 blokes got up and wanted to take my lines. Ended up talking to them for about an hour, they wanted to know everything about sailing.

Have fun !

Nathan / Sea Mist

Say Hello if you pass us (we're on a borrowed buoy for the night at Ramsholt) Nathan - not if you go by at 0300!!!

Beautiful night here on the Deben - wind has dropped completely and clear skies = bright stars.

By the way - George Collins' mobile wasn't giving any joy earlier - I was using the number in East Coast pilot which is 07751 034959 - can anyone verify this?

George Collins is 07930 304061. The number you have is a very old one, more than 4 years old I reckon.

[/ QUOTE ]
New number above is correct and was published as an update on the website below last August. (We do try!).

Thanks - I've updated my east coast pilot (revised 2nd edition 2008) with his number and have just spoken to him to thank him for the use of the mooring.

Visiting Yachts Welcome?

Nathan
I came past your boat in my tender on Friday pm when you were moored at Waldringfield and shouted to you that I had enjoyed your videos. I live in Waldringfield and intended to invite you to the house. When I came back from my yacht, you were obviously ashore at the Sailing Club and I thought you were being looked after by the Club.
I am not a member of WSC, but was shocked to see that you were refused shower facilities. I have passed on your forum notes to the Secretary who was equally shocked and will take it up with the flag officers. The Club were holding a Cadet meeting and maybe you were advised by a parent.
I look forward to your future adventures and hope you get better receptions up the coast
The best forecast around here is normally Radio Suffolk, but they seem to be understating the wind strength this weekend.
