I’m looking at a 10year old Southerly but have been warned that they are prone to structural failure to keel box. Has anyone any experience please ?

Hi
I have a southerly 100 and sailed many miles in a 105 in 1980s, and I have not heard of keelbox failure in any of the southerlies. The iron grounding plate and keel need maintenance, probably on an 8-10 yr basis as others have described. Contact Northshore and the southerly owners association, who have an excellent archive dealing with known areas requiring work. That will depend on model.

And no, I haven't seen any other southerlies with plywood rot as published! I suspect that vessel had suffered fresh water ingress for some time as well as some neglect. The article was noted on the SOA forum and no one reported similar issues.
