Southampton boat show ( Boats2020) cancelled

Life goes on, no one is forcing you to attend any boat show.

You simply dont get it do you. It is not just yourself you put at risk....spreading it puts other at risk. I suppose if you want to be selfish then that is up to you but at least realize you are being selfish, and irresponsible.

And of course life does not go on for those that sadly might die because some irresponsible person wanted to look a t a boat

So are jobs and prosperity. There are risks to our health everywhere in our lives, even at home. There has to be a balance between reducing that risk and not endangering our prosperity so much that life isnt worth living, not to mention the fact that our kids and grandkids will be paying for this through higher taxes and lower incomes

They will pay even longer the longer it goes on.... You just don't get it do you... I shed very few tears for the small losses the already rich boating fraternity might make.

1st class lesson on how to kill consumer and business confidence - well done Southampton CC

Better to kill that than to kill people. I am a boater and enjoy boating but I know that peoples lives are far more important than boating and indeed my prosperity.

I am afraid your priorities are well off beam

I guess you never take your boats out then, because there's always a chance you'll be involved in an accident in which someone loses their life.

There must be a balance between starting to function as a country and controlling the spread of Coronavirus. You have made it quite clear you wish people to live like hermits and that is your right to express that view, it doesn’t make it the correct view. Others are just as entitled to their view and their right to start assisting with an economic recovery responsibly.

Yes Indeed wise but too late..... Peoples lives are important..... Quite frankly a boat show is not........ I am surprised that any sensible person would think differently

Currently 78 people in the UK with Covid in ICU.

Point of original lockdown was to spread the infection out so we didn’t run out of beds.
Remember the big unused nightingale hospitals?

We are not close to running out of beds.

So the restrictions are unjustified and wrong. Talking about deaths is anecdotal scaremongering. You can’t make the world sterile.

The medicine is now worse that the disease.

Have you considered seeking some professional help? I’m not expecting an answer, but your constant obsession with boating costing lives is not healthy.

A number of large scale classic car events / shows have and are still due to take place. By all accounts I can’t see the difference between the boat show and these.

A lot of exhibitors have lost a lot of money.

The changes the other day would have made no difference to the show.

It was outside, 20,000 people expected over 10days so on average 2000 a day. Small show stay half a day. So 1000 people on a large site. Does not seem very high risk. One way pontoons etc.

My children’s school has 1000 pupils with no distancing in year groups and Inside.

if the council wanted to cancel a week ago. Not fine but ok.

What you mean the rich boating fraternity whose taxes pay towards the NHS etc ? who do you think will pay the bill if businesses aren’t earning...are you about to donate your life savings to help ?

Surprised that Southampton council are going to allow students to return to uni given their high level of concern for covid infection. All those foreigners descending on the bars of Soton and those from northern counties should be stopped immediately surely to protect the Soton residents ? Let’s stop the red funnel as well as clearly a massive risk of cork heads bringing in infection.

Mixed views on here .
I was working at OV yesterday admiring all the boats , teams of people all cleaning , making sure clients all get a good look at what’s on offer for the first time this year .
An hour before I’d called in at a well known Volvo dealer to collect parts for my Job ahead to ask how everyone was , sadly to be told the guy I’d asked for had only been made redundant along with 8 others across the group , this is not the only company in the trade that has had casualties .

5 hours later the news that everyone’s effort has been stopped in its tracks , the organisation that had been put in place absolutely shattered everyone’s effort involved , not to mention all the marketing , clients booking hotels , people attending from abroad , boat owners from OV asked to move there own boats out of OV to other marinas to accommodate the space required .

What a sham Southampton council are for this decision , and my view on this is because it won’t make any difference .
The reason I say this is down to the amount of people that will still want to look at boats on offer because my inbox was full of mail from the boat show exhibiting companies still making the effort to show the boats and keep the appointments at Swanwick , Essex , Hamble , etc , why it could not be allowed on a controlled basis I don’t know .
I just hope some of the hard working exhibitors get something back from the thousands they must have spent .

Actually I do get it, I’ve had it. And before it was even meant to be in this country.
So what do you suggest we do ?
Stop everything and hide till it’s gone, cos that’s what it will do right ? It will just disappear like all the other viruses we have had to live with in the past ....
And yes I still wanted to go to show.

Do you want to expand on that? How do you know you have had it before it was in the UK? We had no tests for it????

I get BP's point. As mentioned above, 20.000 people attend the show but how many people are boat buyers? 10-20? Is that not deemed as an unnecessary risk to life? Yeah you can bag a bargain with a chandler etc but they should be savvy and doing it online..."Trade show bargains the week" etc. It's the way the world is moving and quickly (on-line) Don't get me wrong, if people don't take precautions with their and their families lives and snuff it there will be more used boats for sale. Everyone must do their bit, it saves lives!

A joke really the show is cancelled. People won’t be rammed in. Everyone gets social distancing, etc. Last min cancellations at horse racing and football is costing a lot of companies a lot of money they cannot afford to lose. Cannot carry on destroying the economy.

Yea no probs. You know all those symptoms that they talk about.
loss of smell and taste, fever, tight chest. Ect. Well I couldn’t have ticked any more boxes if I tried. This was January.
