Southampton boat show ( Boats2020) cancelled

I feel for you at the moment.
Your fundamental point seems to have been misunderstood.
Selfishness.
In other words it is the action of people attending large gatherings that spreads the disease.
And that isn't fair to people who don't go to those gatherings.

That said, if Covid is going to be with us for the longer term, then society will have to adjust.
There isn't a simple answer to this but society (as an entity) will have to take a greater risk in the future.
And, IMO, society (as a whole) at the moment isn't ready to take the extra risk.

I would hate to be in government at the moment.
Any decisions that government makes will be dammed if they make them and dammed if they don't.

You have your own views and it is good to hear them.
Please don't get despondent and keep posting.

I know several people ( including my ex wife and kids ) who said the same.

they all had anti body tests and all came back negative.

so who knows. They thought they had it. Maybe they did, but proving it seems elusive !

Bigplumbs state’s off doing this and deciding to pick a fight with everyone then calmed down then went quiet. Not sure what has happened but he is now on the attack again. People wonder why some forum members are not seen here any more.

The boating industry is almost universally not well off. The big guys like princess etc are not making any decent moment given the capital employed and the likes of fairline go from crisis the crisis. They are just the big names but lower down the food chain is mostly pretty similar.

do the customers have money? Yes. But even so we all work for what we have and to almost wish there dealers etc to do badly is pretty low.

The changes the other day would have made no difference to the show.

It was outside, 20,000 people expected over 10days so on average 2000 a day. Small show stay half a day. So 1000 people on a large site. Does not seem very high risk. One way pontoons etc.

My children’s school has 1000 pupils with no distancing in year groups and Inside.

if the council wanted to cancel a week ago. Not fine but ok.

I bet more people go through the doors of the Ikea just up the road every day than would have gone to boats 2020, and that’s indoors. Do you think the council will shut them down?
 
With reference to Porto,s post, my youngest daughter used to work for Riviera motor yachts in Austrailia , they have there own boat show at there twelve hectare site including marine , in the day open to all ,but come the evening invitation only from all there dealers ,and jeez do they know how to stage an event, no expense spared, we had a tour of there site very impressive , they have a separate boatyard where they state they will look after your boat for its life, including all refits and upgrades , I wonder if our two larger boat manufacturers are heading this way, could never understand why a manufacturer is not interested in maintaining there product

Bang on. As i said in post #38 things have to be done differently now and Sunseeker are nailing it. They have been doing their own "Walkrounds" of the current fleet with Sean Robertson, Sales Director of Sunseeker on YouTube and they are superb. Most are over a hour long and really get into the boat in depth. Not sales blurb just real knowledge of what he is talking about. Well worth a watch even if you aren't into Sunseeker.

How many car manufacturers do that? If you took your Mercedes back to the company in Stuttgart, do you think they'd maintain it for you? Or do you think they also would be 'not interested in maintaining there product'? :)

They have a network of independent dealerships to rip you off for that. Not their problem now. ;)

I believe some of our small boat builders offer this service ,Brooms used to until they sold out

You said that you could "never understand why a manufacturer is not interested in maintaining there product". I was trying to illustrate why. Large manufacturers tend to be in the business of making the product, not taking in Fred and Joe's boat (or car or whatever) for a tart up.

Rocking up with your 10 year old Sunseeker at the factory that built it and expecting them to crane it out and antifoul it for you or whatever woud be a litle like turning up at the Mercedes factory and asking them to put some new tyres on and fit a new exhaust.

If manufacturers did offer that service it would probably be top dollar and not many would want to pay that.
most seem to use independents.

I've always thought that boat manufacturers are missing a huge trick by not offering an active spare parts service to their customers. Manufacturers of products like cars and construction machinery understand that spare parts sales can be a huge profit centre for them. Not only that but spares turnover is usually less affected by economic downturns than sales of the finished product. And manufacturers often negotiate large OEM discounts with component suppliers which would allow them to sell parts from those suppliers to consumers at similar or lower cost than the component suppliers would sell to the consumer. How much easier would it be for boat owners if, every time they needed a part for their boat, they could simply phone the boat dealer or manufacturer, knowing they'd get the right part they needed, rather than trawling the internet looking for suppliers of that part and occasionally ending up with the wrong part

Stand corrected ,maybe should have said refitting and upgrading, who better to rip your boat apart and put it back together again, the main point of my post was that some boat manufacturers are already not relying on the main stream boat shows , but are staging there own ,
