South coast moorings

Foulkes security is the various number of liveaboards.

At Eastlands the previous owner has a house on site that overlooks the pontoon. while site (and house) recently sold so I don’t know who will move in when they leave. New owners saying all the right things at the moment.

Deacons doesn’t have 24/7 staff at the yard, however I was there for 4 years and not aware of any security issues. Pontoons have gate security, and a barrier to access by road. Most vulnerabilities from the water. Will be the same for most marinas.

I’m sure if you have any suggestions for Deacons on security then you should make known but my impression is they have dedicated staff and a large budget at least for shiny new signs so if a few cameras are required it would be worth mentioning. If security is a concern Haslar at Gosport has staff on duty but clearly Deacons rates are cheaper .

We looked at Haslar, but preferred the location of Deacons for our journey down from the Midlands. We fell off the M27 and straight into the marina. I was always happy with the security there, so felt no need to raise it. Rachel who joined after the D and R takeover from Haslar was brilliant. In fact all the staff there are first class. Interestingly we were at Portishead Quay marina before we brought the boat round to the Solent, and of course they are now part of the conglomerate.

The problem with Deacons is that the tide sluices through. I am told you can only enter or leave a berth near to high or low water, but I must admit no first hand experience.

While Gosport itself if it is every to prosper needs a needs a decent road in it does boast more supermarkets than you would think possible -a peaceful Waitrose where it’s a delight to shop in early evening compared to our local ones, a quality Morrison’s, a shiny new Aldi ,plus two Lidl and now a M&S for supplies on your way in . Good chandleries and yards. As said also easy access. Downsides are a shortage of onsite dining as the 2 marina ones tend to fill up so booking can be hard, however there is a passable Thai and the whole Gunwharf dining experience is a short green ferry trip away. In terms of facilities ocean village is good but you have the run down Soton water which might become tedious after a while. Haslar has none of the evils of locks like port Solent and chi and challenges of entry like Sparkes .
clearly it lacks the charms of Lymington and the facilities are not on a par with Berthon or YachtHaven but as a resident shower blocks might not be so important for many. Also while Gosport drivers are not first rate at least you don’t have to endure the traffic on approaches unlike Lym. Many like Deacons and as said Rachel is first rate but it is more tricky-I guess it’s price point reflects some of the berthing challenges. A lot of this also turns on where you are travelling from but A3 M275 is normally fine apart from the tailback roundabout they haveleft in for Gilbert Whites house when travelling southbound.

You had to check for the current surge, but it dies down after 20 mins and is fine for launch/ berthing once the surge has died down. Our boat at 40’ was about as big as you would want except on the hammer heads.

True. We're in Swanwick (not a ££ bargain in any way) which is on teh orther side of teh Hamble and less tidally challenged, but even there the Spring ebb can be a challenge. Timing is all.
