Following up on my post of a few weeks ago of a "Schizophrenic Yanmar 1GM10" which ocassionally vibrated intermittenly......this now appears to be the symptom and not the cause...... which looks like a transmission fault in the gearbox. At anything above idle revs the shifting cone is not properly engaging and is jumping in and out of gear (causing the vibration).

I've now got the gearbox out and have Yanmar distributer looking at it but he believes spares maybe a problem. Has anybody else had to replace the shifting cone or can recommend the best place for either spares or a re-conditioned 1GM10 gearbox ? Is it worth repairing or should I bite the bullet and replace the 16 year old gearbox with a new one if one is available ?

Thanks in advance

Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

If you're on the Solent area you could try Marine Power at Deacon's Boatyard, Bursledon. They are agents for Yanmar and Volvo, engines and parts, they cleaned up the head on my 1GM7 a couple of years ago for a not-too-extortionate price. Alternatively do a search of the forum, I'm sure this cropped up not long ago.
