My Lewmar C3 capstan winch is once again giving trouble and one of the brushes has stuck and broken from the copper. Lewmar only supply replacement motor assemblies, does anyone know of a specialist supplier of suitable brushes? I know there are loads of sources of brushes online but I was wondering if the knowledgeable on here could recommend any specific supplier for marine or industrial type motors? Thanks in advance!

Lewmar don't make motors so it must be an off the shelf unit.
If you take it to a local motor rewinder they may be able to help identify it and provide brushes.

You may have to measure your existing brushes to confirm the dimensions, have a look and see if they are hard or soft. Soft are usually quite black whilst hard brushes tend to be more grey in colour, a rub with a thumb nail can help! It can be important to get the correct grade. Both for brush and commutator wear.

I had a set of new brushes for a windlass made by this company.
Sent them a sample of an old brush, and they made up the new ones. Person I dealt with was Garry Forde, very helpful.
You would probably have to guess at the original length of the brush, but if it turns out too long, can always file a bit off.

Hi Nigel, many thanks but I might be missing a link or something. What was the company please?
