Here's a supplementary question if anyone is interested in picking it up[/b]:
1. Do you make any plans to allow for the tide?
2. If you use an autopilot, do you use "steer to waypoint" or "steer to compass" or a bit of each? And if you use waypoints, how do you decide where to put them?
When I boated in the UK S.Coast (in a boat with 25kt cruise speed) I "allowed" for the tide but not the way a rag boat would. I checked which way the wind was going and set off at a time that would give me wind with tide not wind against tide. Even if that meant I was pushing a few knots of tide. I rate comfy passage for the guests higher priority than getting there asap
In this scenario, in a 3hour crossing with no change in tide direction I'd autopilot to a waypoint not to a heading because the DTW saving by autopilotting to a heading would be absolutely tiny. If in a ragboat or an 8 knot mobo I would autopilot to a heading, to save me a few miles of DTW
As for waypoints, I never have stored any in 12years of GPS plotter boating. I just put the cursor where I want the waypoint and "goto cursor".
