We need to take our Starlight 35 out of the water for a couple of weeks. Is there anywhere recommended in the Solent area?

I have been lifted out for a couple of weeks at Gosport Boat Yard for some years. Good Chandleries for bits and bobs nearby and good skilled people on site should you need them. Main disadvantage is the dreaded A32. I have also heard good reports of the place at the top of Portsmouth Harbour which I think is called Trafalgar Wharf.

The Medina has the logistics problem of the ferry, unfortunately. I've checked with Gosport and they have quoted me about £600 which seems pretty expensive to me!

Check out the prices from various yards on the Hamble, from Port Hamble to Universal to Deacons, then see if the Gosport quote is competitive.

Other considerations are your transport needs if any - car or public transport? - if the latter then Deacons is almost bang by Burseldon train station.

Why do you need two weeks storage ashore?

We have a few jobs to do, to prepare for the rest of the year. Polishing, new cutlass bearing, volvo seal, antifouling etc.

If you are staying on the boat you need not worry about ferries or any other form of transport.

You might find Wicor cheaper but far less convenient for connections ? Would be useful to see their quote though and any other locations you discover. Personally would avoid any location on the island which might require the use of FB6 to reach the facilities in west Cowes though whatever the rates . We use Gosport BY and have always found them helpful and there are a anumber of other Haslar yachts there we see for lifting etc.

MDL are currently offering their Summer Specials - normally just a lift out, jet wash and relaunch, but I assume they will also offer some reduction if you want to stay ashore for a couple of weeks.

I'm paying £22/m at Hamble Point, but they only charge £16/m at Shamrock and Hythe. so that would be about £170 for a 10.65m boat. don't know how much blocking off and storage ashore would add to that though.

Shamrock have quoted £400. Hyde suffers from a lack of chandlery. Still looking.

Wicor do a special 2 week summer deal which has worked well for me in the past, Once you are ashore its only 10 mins to/from the M27, and about 10 mins from Wicor to Marine Superstore at Port Solent for big items chandlery. There are also some items available at Wicor, (brushes, split pins and so on).

Drivers Dry berthing at the top of the Ichen is somewhere that I have used several times over the years. Rates are good and they are the only yard that I trust to lift the boat without me there. A short walk to Shamrock Quay for chandlers, and walkable to the city centre.

No connection, other than a happy customer.

Very many thanks to everyone for your suggestions, both on here and by PM. We will be out tomorrow, up the Itchen. Then the work begins!
