Solent marinas for a week or so in the summer

I spoke to MDL regarding our berth that will be vacant for two months after mid May.

We aren't allowed to let anyone on it at all as our contract is for the boat not the berth. Whilst it's out of the water, they will kindly give us 3 Otium Points (worth £3) if they use it for a visitor (who will be paying c £50/60 to stay).

The 3 points are not payable for any nights we stay in another MDL marina even though we have to pay to stay there (we're not on the Freedom Berthing contract).

I live in the badlands of sarf London. We know everyone on our street.
When I first left the army and was looking for work, I lived in a flat in Camberwell with a bunch of students. I was very surprised any of them passed their courses as the whole street was constantly partying.

Yes, they certainly have you by the balls with the contracts. We used to have the option of 28 days free at other MDL marinas but we just didn’t use them as it was cheaper to use others for the few times we stayed elsewhere. When we decided to sell the boat we gave the statutory 4 weeks notice and enquired about short term dry storage but it was much cheaper to move elsewhere, no discount despite having been a customer for five years.

Places like Cowes, Yarmouth and Lymington Town Quay will raft.

I usually draw one of those clock faces with "We plan to depart at : 0500" and stick it in our window to deter newcomers ;-)
So it was you that I rafted to once. Gave you a shock when I woke you up at 5 !

The boat later in the morning said they wanted to leave at 11 so I went shopping ! I had no sympathy for them mucking me around :)

We once were long terms visitor at Plymouth Yacht Haven, it was mildly amusing to see the efforts they went to avoid allocating a berth that had a permanent resident which would then require them to pay some of their fees to said resident

Luckily we are too long for the Lym town quay so have to enjoy the delights of the showers at Berthon each morning plus the berths are longer and no danger of tramping across the decks. The only disturbance at Berthon is the polishing of the mobo topsides by the local apprentices early in the morning .

Pop up the Hamble and you can stay in a few marinas. If you want a treat phone the Elephant boatyard. Your see classic boats. Train 500 yards to Southampton. Good chandlers in walking distance and a pub you can tie your tender up to. Lots going on too.

I believe Hardway has some length and depth restrictions though which the OP might check up on - no objections to Hardway and there is a reasonable pub nearby I recall for food as well as usual liquid supplies. If in area fuel at Premier which as a Haslar boat must learn more about the current bertholder rates per litre .

The only problem when you get ashore is the quality of the fare offered by the Folly Inn . I cannot comment on quality of wine and beer offered . A better bet if you can is to visit the Lifeboat Inn by the East Cowes marina if your dinghy/outboard is up to it .
No one goes to the Folly for decent food - it's a pub for beer + music + dancing on the tables.

Since Deacons extended there's a nasty tide that can catch you out and push you sideways in to a priceless wooden boat. On one occasion they had Suhaili and Gypsy Moth IV on the pontoon.

As for the pub/shrine to Howard's Way - there are some nice pubs a short walk away - can even find Rimmer from Red Dwarf in one of them.

Hardway sailing club, Gosport -- 10 quid a night - plus cheap beer - pontoon all states of the tide . . pub, museum etc etc
The pontoon has been extended - it's now 500m long, but at low springs, over half still dries and a fin will be in the mud even at the end. It's deep, soft mud though, so even a deep fin will sit happily in it.

Come in on a rising tide, and you'll be fine, but don't be late on a falling tide!

I thought that all ended when Mitchells & Butlers stripped it of all character carried out renovation & modernisation works in 2022?

The Jolly Sailor tries hard to hide the Howards Way affiliation nowadays. The missus has lunch with the girls there regularly and isn't deeply impressed by service/prices.

Last time I went the beer choice was lacklustre, the food was OK, and I'm sure there were signs up saying no dancing on the tables..
Correct. Those days are long gone, 20 years or more. It’s a very ordinary Whitbread pub now. Not terrible, not amazing. Good, well sheltered mooring if the weather is up to no good, showers and loos ashore are adequate.

Apart from the wall with the psychedelic Andy Warhol inspired homage to the actors?
