Solar Panels

[ QUOTE ]
Are semi flexible panels efficient and worth the money?

No. Get an FLS instead and a rigid angle mounted panel /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

(This is not a serious reply)

YM or PBO did an issue about solar panels testing them
in the past two years i think
i do remember that a piece of narrow line across them can vastly reduce their efficiency
not sure if you can check the back issues for which one.

If you need to mount them on deck such that you will walk on them then the robust flexy ones are essential. No where near as efficient as the modern rigid ones though.

Worth it? Let me ask why you want solar power.

I have 2 Solara 120M and I 'm very pleased. I didn't have to add any superstracture to the boat and I do have some considerable charge (25Ah per day in the summer). In fact a rough estimation shows that their Amp/m² performance is not significantly lower than that of the rigid ones.

Kyocera (rigid, one of the best) KC40: 65.28cm * 52.58 cm = 0.343 m² , 2.34 Amp , 6,82 Amp/m²
Solara (semi-flexible) SM120M: 58.93cm * 44.96cm = 0.265 m² , 1.7 Amp, 6.49 Amp/m²

Please check my calculations as they seem too good to be true to me...

Partial shadowing does not seem to shut them off altough some performance loss is inevitable.

OTOH this is Greece ...

I have posted a picture recently but I will repeat here for convenience:

Hi we were moored almost next to you in Lagos last year D40 Intrepid and we spoke several times. Intrepid now back UK as trading up to 44. Solar panal is for when when we are back down in your part of world and not in a marina!. Same reason and uses as I suppose you have for your panel.
