Solar panels wear and tear

Ok. Another daft question. When I am on shore power the smart charger takes over and the solar controller "dumps" the input from our solar panels. Daft question is, does the process of the panels producing charge and the controller dumping it contribute to wear and tear? Would it prolong the life of the panels if they were covered when not needed? Relevant in this weather but I am also thinking of when we are holed up in a marina over winter and on shore power for several months.
 
AFAIK using them makes little difference to their output. However, exposing them to the elements means that the plastic bits will degrade and that water will eventually find a way in. Covering them may help but few bother. It may be sensible out of season though.
