Can anyone recommend any sailing simulation software? I am particularly looking for something that is good for teaching sail and course setting in various wind conditions.
I have a CDrom called interactive sailing by gamers choice ISBN 1-57709-223-6
that I bought on special for around $NZ10. It is a racing game with lots of user definable features.(wind direction , speed and range of veer. plus a manual mode where the user hoists and sets the various sails on a J-105 whatever that is. Also included are various video clips on different racing techniques.)
It is fairly basic in the graphics but is worth buying if it is cheap as it was when I bought it.
Offshore sailing by seacow games is OK ( and free, do a search on google)
But....don't expect it to give a realistic simulation of sailing
a) you don't get wet
b) It doesn't cost you far more than you thought it would
c) You can turn it off if you don't like it
A dingy sailing course may be of more practical use. If you want shorebased unstructured learning there are a number of pamphlets by PBO and others on sail trim etc, but nothing compares to actually getting out there.
