did you see 'Ultimate Force' a week back - that's my idea of a sociable shower (for those who didn't see it, communal mixed showering) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Goes back to the coal pits where there was a shower after work, and one could bend to pick up the soap with impunity.

i don't think the fees for the WCC rallies are all that high when you consider the costs of putting on the events. the fees go on-

staff salaries, travel, accommodation
berths
documentation etc
parties
communications
base office overheads
profits (AKA Chay's booze bills)

the more stops the bigger the fee so for example ARC Europe costs a lot more than ARC (of course the latter has economies of scale)

Rally Portugal costs

2004 Rally:

£450 for the boat
£175 for each skipper/crew member doing the whole trip (or £25 per leg)

We had 3 POB all the way to Lagos and 2 additional POB for the Plymouth (Falmouth) Bayona leg. Total £1025

Mainas were Plymouth/Falmouth, Bayona, Povoa de Varzim, Lexioes, Figuira de Foz, Peniche, Cascais, Sines, and Lagos; over a 3 week travel window - all part of the cost.

Visits to local places of interest (I recall the visit to Lisbon and the Porto wine lodge) were arranged for all the ports. - all part of the cost.

All formalities, registration in Marinas were handled by WCC - we just pitched up, given our berth no about 2 miles out, and the marineros were there to take our lines. (All we had to do was open the beer on arrival!) - all part of the cost.

Several welcome and prizegiving dinners were laid on. All part of the cost.

A T-shirt /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif; all part of the cost.

Excellent value; couldn't do this cheaper, in more amiable company, and have so much fun in getting from A to B. Wouldn't hesitate in doing it again -but maybe not the Biscay leg!

May not always be a shower as such, but you are obviously good on your old history, and remember that "good Queen Bess" bathed once a year whether she needed to or not!
Just imagine what the Brits might have done had it not been for the example set by Elizabeth 1st.!

Re: decent price

hm. Can't argue with 3 weeks (spose 2 in ports?) berth for a 45footer for starters. The "not having to prat about booking" is worth something too.

So all in all, i suppose £1023.50 without the t-shirt wd be v reasonable :)

The smelliest person I ever had the misfortune to share a boat with was actually an Australian!

Re: Rally Portugal costs

Actually, the ones that I have been tempted by are the Portugese, Biscay Triangle etc They seem better value although I still jib at £1k for the fees...

Perhaps I am just resentful at not having thought up/patented the idea of getting a lot of yachts to pay me to fly round the world, book their berths and stay in hotels - or am I being unduly cynical?

Despite all this, we actually enjoy cruising in company and we often end up cruising with other boats for a few days. Usually because the children have met up with some children off another boat and want to stay with them, and the adults have got into the habit of pre or post dinner drinks together or both....
