Jimmy Green are selling 4 different Cromox Stainless anchor chains. There are 316 & 318 and you can have it electro-plated or non-electroplated. What is the difference? The price difference between the non-plated 316 against the plated 318 is huge.

Cromox Stainless Anchor Chain

My boat at the moment has a standard 10mm galvanised steel (Probably Lewmar) chain. Am I correct in thinking that either of the above chains will be stronger? Are there any real benefits for the electro-plating or is it a vanity thing?

I want to go stainless because my chain is reaching end of life, I like the idea os a chain that does not pile up, won't rust and will come up clean.

You want their G60 Duplex chain. my guess is you have a G30 gal chain and the G60 will allow you to reduce chain size by one size. 10mm to 8mm etc. However if you use a windlass you will need to change the gypsy. Your will thus save on the chain, because you can use smaller chain, but will need to buy a gypsy. Note that you will need to buy matching (for strength) connectors - which you can also source in the Cromox range, shackles etc. You will need a matching stainless anchor - make sure that what you choose has a Duplex shank in the 2205 alloy (many are simply 316 and are prone to bending).

I'd go to the Ketten and Walder site for full detail.

Your other option is to buy G70 chain, also in a smaller size. It should last you 4 years.

You can now do the sums.

You can regalvanise G70 chain at any galvaniser - so when you have used it for 3 years plan the next years passages to allow you to visit somewhere that had Hot Dipped Galvanising to hand. Many western countries (if western is not racist) are not keen on galvanising chain. Australia is a bit of an exception and there are a number of galvanisers here who will gal chain. Regalvanising G70 is not an issue it will come out the same strength as went in as long as you have not lost basic wire thickness. If you were in Australia or the US I'd suggest you have Armorgalv coated chain, it does not carry mud (in the same way stainless does not carry mud), it will be much cheaper than G70 or stainless, will last bit longer than G70 and is easier to find matching connectors.

Don't get the ideas stainless will come up sparklingly clean ever time, you will still need a decent deck wash. There is mud and mud and cloying mud cloys - not matter what.

But the smaller chain will allow you to carry less weight in the bow, or more chain - or a combination of both. If you need a new windlass it can be smaller (cost less).

With smaller chain you will lose some catenary effect and need a decent snubber (cheap as chips)

Cromox will still abrade - it will get thinner.
