So Soltron is shown not to work!

I am being told by the Soltron people that:-

1. The way the tests were done killed the enzymes.

2. The testing was done by people who supplied the winning product!!

Looks like it will be a good barney on this.
 
It does not stop 1979 turbo'd ford sabre's from smoking on start up, nor their opposition mermaids, and that is a fact. However I should point out that according to Mermaid this a design feature.

I have used Soltron over the years and it appears to work. I have not suffered with the dreaded bug, it cleared reported bug in my current boat and the transom does not show signs of sooting if I use it. However I have not noticed any difference in the fuel usage.
 
My mermaids dont smoke, even on start up and I dont use soltron, cant get any!!!
Are yours turbo ones, they seem to smoke a little.
 
You may remember all my exhaust flap trials to reduce soot on the back of my boat. Well they didn't work. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

After using Soltron the soot gradually reduced, now about 90% so I'm quite pleased too, also not had bug problems either.

I'd be interested to know what the winning product was as well.
 
Independent labs tests conducted by MBM a couple of years back showed the same results, although a Soltron representative also made comments then about tests being conducted incorrectly.
 
I used Soltron and suffered blocked filters after 6 months of using it, I think I just put some dirty fuel in.
I seem to remember that in a previous MBM test of Soltron it had no effect, but it was claimed this was because the enzymes weren't given long enough to react. This may have been true but in my case, if putting contaminated fuel in and Soltron, if its going to take a week to work its a waste of time.
I certainly won't be bothering with it again.
 
Comment?! I did a fuel burn experiment over a couple of hundred hours running in a Mercedes ML270 and posted the results here, showing imho that Soltorn's claims of 5% better mpg were wrong. It was a decent experiment, the car driver didn't even know the fuel was being laced with Soltron so couldn't have influenced her behaviour

But that was just mpg, not bug kill ability. Did the MBM report say Soltron is no good at killing bugs?
 
There is no doubt that Soltron does work. I've even been asked by mechanics, how come my boats stopped smoking.

Obviously, it wont mend a broken engine, nor improve on a new one.

It does get rid of bugs. It does clean injectors. But not if there clean already!!
 
Your Mermaids are in a warmer climate than ours, and yes ours are turbo'd and intercooled, have no heat starts only excess fuel buttons, in the UK winter we go to Radar before we start them, once under load they are clear in about 2 minutes.
 
I might be wrong but I think Soltron claims to work in a totally different way to biocide bug killers, by removing the crud that the bugs live and grow on. In my case our club engineer is a big Soltron fan and persuaded me to use it some years ago when our filters were murky, albeit not really bad, and by the following service they were pristine clean.

Our latest boat was a bit smokey on start up when we bought her and our club man said double dose with Soltron and see if it improves, we did just that and it did improve as again did the state of the filters as seen on services.

Our recent service showed we had picked up some water in the fuel, fortunately caught by the watertrap, yet there was no sign of the bug and the fuel filters themselves were clean so we were able to drain off any water from the tank with some confidence that was the only problem. Our last refuel BTW was in St Peter Port and the tank (sailboat) was just 2 gallons off being totally full so condensation was unlikely to be the cause.

So, on balance I'm still a Soltron fan. Maybe if starting with a tankfull of bugs, I might use a biocide bug killer first then use Soltron to maintain the system. Using biocides all the time I understand results in biocide resistant bugs and that doesn't help anyone.
 
How do you have PBO today (April?) I did not think it was out for a couple of days?

Soltron is MOD and NATO approved. It has major industrial and commercial users who have tested it and now use it.

I have used it for years and find that my fuel filters are very clean as is my stern.

So I am not having a go at Soltron - just wanting to get to the truth.

Its great to see a magazine give a critical review - I only hope that it was an indeoendent review and that the lab was not owened by the winner. I await the answer. All I am after is the truth.
 
Yes, what folk do not seem to realise. Soltrons main market is comercial. It's even in my marinas tanks, thats why I dont bother buying it much these days.

Would'nt mind betting it's in most folks boats and cars anyway.
