Yet another insurance thread

I started with GJW before calling anyone else.

The premium last year was £2138. This year they wanted £ 2574

With a £3000 excess which I am happy with it has come back down to £2172 so I have agreed the renewal as it is better than spending hours on the phone.

Thanks for all your contributions.

Craftinsure.
Sent them the estimates of cost of repair and lift along with pixs of damage.
Taken about a week to get permission to go ahead.
Problem will now be finding an early lift and booking gel coat man in between our planned trips.
Boat out for several days, opportunity to tidy up a very scruffy boot stripe plus sorting A/F and Anodes.

I'm with Craftinsure and have no direct experience of their claims handling. However our Eriba caravan was insured with Ripe (which seems to be the same company) - and they were really good sorting out the claim when it was written off.

Have made 2 claims over past 20 years and in the past they dealt with the claims without any quibbling and promptly.
Appears so far to be the same with RIPE.
Providing no hidden work turns up, been told to settle bill and claim back from them or ask for invoices to be send direct to Craftinsure for settlement.
Will await the cost of renewal in June with some interest.

We were with GJW and when I made a claim that was settled over 2 years ago I have to say, GJW were simply superb. And then this years renewal arrived. The premium had leapt up by 48%! When I asked them to justify it, they said it's because I'd had a claim and costs had risen. Almost immediately they offered a "loyalty" discount bringing the increase down to 25%. I turmed that down and it was referred to the underwriters and it came down again.
I've now had a quote from Haven Knox Johnson which is £20 less than last years premium for a policy with slightly better T&Cs.

GJW have just sent me a renewal quote for my ski boat. 10 quid cheaper than last year? I am surprised given the increase on the other boat.

Had my renewal in from HKJ. It was only slightly more than last year HOWEVER they changed from agreed value to "replace with similar boat, open market valuation, value on policy, whichever is less", plus they insisted on a survey (despite offering them comprehensive maintenance records). I tried Porthcrawl and they were approx 20% more, but on an All Risks policy, agreed value, lower excess. They did have to adjust their policy to include 'unattended in a recognised anchorage' and 'single handed operation.', but neither added to the policy cost.

I was with GJW ... renewal went from £800 to £1000 with no additional claims or changes.
Errrkkk No!
I am shopping around.

Another GJW customer with a renewal premium 20% more than last year.
In the end I renewed with GJW. As jrudge suggested I phoned them and an increase in the excess resulted in a significant reduction in the premium which I was happy with.

How much did I have to increase the excess by? Just £100.

Interesting - we are with GJW and have been happy with them for a while but our renewal will be due in the next couple of months so we will see what they come up with.

Hi Greg,
The guy I spoke to was very helpful. He explained the reduction in premium is not necessarily proportional to the amount of the excess. His suggestion was to increase the excess by just £100 which more than halved the year on year increase which I was happy to accept. Like car insurance, I’ve never been able to get my head around the dark art of boat premium calculation.
Hope all is well with you.
Jim

Random large premium increases when I haven't claimed and nothing has changed just annoy me.
I'm not going to enter into a process of negotiation with someone that has just tried to stiff me for almost £200.
Very similar policy with a competitor is £801.

That's my thinking too, why contact them and have to haggle to get the correct price ? They clearly tried it on, so move to someone that doesn't do that.

My Portcawl policy seems to go up about £5 per year and was initially half of what Topsail wanted (after taking over from Y Yacht).

Have you tried Visicover?

A Unique Online Boat & Aircraft Insurance Service

I was with GJW, just switched to Visicover.
I don’t like their exclusion for galvanic corrosion but decided on balance I didn’t care either.
Other than that policy is good agreed value and no survey bollocks.
I looked for a quote with Visicover and it said they wanted a full out of water survey.
