So if you were living in Motherwell, where would you moor?

OK. Had a think about this.

1 You probably won't stay in Motherwell. Nothing against Motherwell. My first flat was in Hamilton across the M74.

2 Depends on your use of the boat. If it is every weekend anywhere on the Clyde would be ok and up the West coast for the holidays?

3 Use Occassional? Get a mooring in the Oban area. Available at Kimmelford (though some dodgy characters lurk there); Ardfern; Croabh - although marina only; Balvicar and Crinan Harbour. All the previous have tidal gates to some extent, although Silkie, Claymore DaveS etc seem to be able to get out and about OK. Further north is Oban/Kerrera or round the corner to Dunstaffanage (marina only there). Up to Loch Creran is also on from the Central Belt.

4 For the Clyde, really you have the choice of Upper firth or Lower firth.

Upper firth - Helensburgh/Rhu/Roseneath - miles to go to get to Tarbert and back. The long slog home on a Sunday evening was one of the main reasons we moved.
Royal Northern. You have to Join the club though....

Royal Gourock - bloody awful mooring. Very exposed.
Cardwell Bay. Ok. Parents used to keep boat there for years.
Holy Loch - ferry connection needed

Fairlie Bay. Can't sleep over night unless doped up with anti-seasickness tablets. Rock and Roll!

Port Bannatyne. Needs ferry connection.

Anywhere on the Kyles. Toward - ferry needed.
Colintraive - Would have to organise own mooring - but a possibility.
Loch Riddon - As Colintraive
Tighnabruaich - waiting list for moorings from Maramarine at boatyard
Kames - taken. Sorry.

There will be other hidey-holes I've not included, mainly for access problems and I've missed the main marinas which are:

Rhu (who do do moorings but are bloody expensive (about £1200 for 6 months rental) stop sniggering down south....)
Kip
Largs (Does Fairlie Quay do moorings?)
Ardrossan
Troon

I don't have the experience of the other posters here, but I just bought my first boat last year, and I took her up to a permanent berth at dunstaffnage last weekend from kip where she had been for the last few years. Basing yourself round about oban gives you a huge and varied cruising area compared to the clyde, which is a pretty fantastic area, but not quite the same as further north. I live in Lanark , but a 2.5 - 3 hour trip to the boat doesn't seem to bad for me. The M74 is a reasonable commuter road to motherwell so you could live in glasgow and get up to Arfern,Crinan,Oban even quicker.

PS Dunstaffnage do have a few moorings - 5 I think

Blimey - see what happens when you're away for a few days! I'd no idea this was on the cards!

Lots of great sailing on the Clyde, and good advice from Donald etc.

We moved north and west from the Clyde about three or four years ago, and have had no regrets. Our summer mooring at Appin on Loch Linnhe is about two and a quarter hours drive from Stirling (which, incidentally, is not terribly far from the Motherwell area). However, we prefer to winter her on the Clyde for ease of access.

See you around!

There are some near mine - and the lifting keel might be an advantage.
