Very few this year. Just one pod halway between Cavtat and Brindisis. Two turtles though, one outside and one inside the Amvrakia gulf. Two years ago we had a very large dolphin swimming upside down under the bow as we sailed fast into filthy Pula harbour!

Dolphins are carnivores, preying on fish, squid and crustaceans. They like to go where their food supplies are richest. Not surprisingly they tend to disappear from fished-out areas.

It's one of the best experiences of sailing to have them come and play with your boat. I've often wondered why dolphins, like other carnivores and omnivores such as dogs, cats and monkeys are playful, while herbivores are not.

Baby Dolphin!

We've seen plenty of dolphins around the Balearics this summer and a few pilot whales too.

Yesterday, whilst crossing the Canal de Mallorca about 2/3 of the way across heading for Ibiza, four dolphins came to play off the bow, along with one baby dolphin. I hadn't seen a baby dolphin before - a very special moment :)
