Having read Derek Salmon's report on the 21 I am a little confused regarding the outboard. I quote

'At the very back end of the cockpit in its own tailor-made well, was a Mercury 7.5 outboard which is raised and lowered by the builders own 'Easy Lift Hoist' pulley system...... Unfortunately, Thames Marine make the plug (which fills the hole in the hull to fit only the Mercury 7.5 Shaft. The plug takes the thrust of the outboard when in use. If you wish to to use any other outboard, the plug will probably not fit around the shaft and so will not take the thrust. The bracket to which the outboard is clamped is not designed to take any thrust and will not 'stand up to strain if a plug is not used'.

Having just purchased a 21 I am a little confused by the above. A translation would be appreciated. The transom seems to be able to slide up and down in two grooves and two loops are apparent on either side one sporting a piece broken rope. No 'East Lift Hoist' is in position.
The Yamaha 8hp I am using seems to be performing OK. However, it drags in the water when in Sailing Mode. Do I need an Easy Lift Hoist and a Plug? If so can I make these items or where can they be bought? The cover over the engine compartment seems to be very home made. Can a new cowl be purchased?

Hi,

I am also looking at buying a Snapdragon 21. You mention the report from Derek Salmon.
How do you get access to that report ?
Could you send me some pointers ?

Many thanks,

D.

Plenty S 21's use other engines and many owners have adapted the lift arrangements to get the engine raised while sailing. This means taking of the top cover though.

Many I have checked over have a tackle arrangement that 'carries' the outboard weight while on the slides.

It is worth contacting and joining the Snapdragon Association and asking them - as they have original plans and schematics for all Snaps ....

As to a plug being the thrust bearer for the engine ... I would not like to use an outboard leg against any block or plug ... the ally would soon start to wear away ...... the only plugs I have seen are those that close the hole with engine out ... but then again these may have been after-thoughts by owners and not original.
