Smokey Johnson

Hi,

Have a new Johnson 150hp V6 2 Stroke. Have only put about 40 hours on it so far but it has gone through its initial 10 hours of run-in.

Although old technology, it seems to be a good engine (if a little thirsty) but it smokes heavily on start up (even when warm) - which is a bit embarrasing in marinas etc. It has a separate oil fill tank.

Anybody know if this is normal for a 2 stroke?

Normal for this type of motor, you may be able to significantly reduce or completely stop the smoke by switching to synthetic oil.

Sometimes choke can get a bit sticky and not close properly always worth a check.

Any of the majors, Quicksilver, Yam ect will be O.K.

Joys of owning a conventional 2 stroke I'm afraid, Blue smoke is the norm at start up together with wallet numbing fuel consumption at any speed! I used to have a V6 Johnson 150 VRO - '87 Gulf Import model (unused til 97). Smokey and so so thirsty. When it died (water ingress) we replaced it with a Merc Optimax - the difference was franky staggering. Gone one better now with a Yamaha HPDI - the dogs nads of 2 strokes imho.
