Smoke (again)

OK, putting injectors back in again didn't seem that hard and only took a couple of hours by the time I had untangled the fuel pipes:). However the previously voluminous white smoke is now mid grey and only a bit less voluminous but does clear in a couple of minutes. Furthermore there is a noticeable "ticking" sound when the engine runs.

Any suggestions?

my 6354 make laods of smoke until they are warm and under some load. I think that's fine.

Have you messed with the fuel pump timing?

The ticking could be a tappet. when did you last run across the rockers with a feeler gauge?

make sure you refit the clamps that stop the injection pipes from vibrating, otherwise they crack.....dont ask how I know this.....

Pump marks don't align. As I couldn't shift it I've left it alone for now. I think there's another nut I didn't spot (three?) Tappets have not been checked, prior to my fiddling with injectors I dodn't notice the sound. Tappets scares me, no idea how to do that getting #1 on TDC and so forth. Guess I'd better find out.

Bear in mind that clean injectors also tap a little, if it is the tappets it is more likely to be a sewing machine noise. Open your car bonnet with the engine running and you should be able to hear injector tap (unlikley to hear tappets in a car as they nearly all have hydraulic tappets)

Good Luck

Make sure the new injectors are seated properly, did you renew the copper washers? tappets are doddle use the rule of thirteen i.e. valve 1 down adjust 12, valve 2 down adjust 11, and so on, you will find that you will have two valves down at the same time say 1 and five, in that case adjust 12 and 8. With most older turbo'd engines the smoke is a design feature and must be accepted, it should and probably does clear when under load and warmed up. Try not to be paranoid about it, I know from experience that most obectors never start their engines anyway and if they do it's only to warm the washing up water. Good luck.

Then try this, start engine and allow to warm up a bit then in turn crack the joint at the injector/pipe and note a drop in in revs, the one that makes no difference is the one that's not working, and maybe the tapping will not be there either. Before you berate me, I fitted a full set on our Ford Sabre that were reconditioned but one of those was defunct. From now on I do not assume that recon or new bits are going to work.

6.345 are commom engines to smoke-
Firstly to try and help you i would need to know age, hours, serial numbers, type of use, injection pump serial no's, injector no's etc to be able to advise in more detail but.....
1. Injector washers are different thickness on some 6.345's.
2. Injection pump bronze hub gears can wear, causing smoke (normally in commercial applications, pleasure use low hours not normally a problem)
3. a ticking noise is normally nothing to worry about on the 6.345

i can't find the full details of your first post etc, but please feel free to send me (PM) as much info as possible and I will see if i can help.

Kind Regards J
