Hi Forum Members,

I need to tap into the wealth of knowledge held on this site by its members Again

Having inherited this cooker when I purchased my new boat a Hurley 30/90 in December 09, the only infomation I have is limited to a small instalation manual which covers about six or severn different cookers all under the same instructions.

My question is, according to the instructions this cooker has the fascility to have a 12v electical ignition for automatic gas ignition. the only thing is, I can't find out where the conection block is, they say its on the back of the cooker but I can't find any removeable panel which is what one would expect to find.

Does anybody have one of these cookers? and if they have, have they got it wired for automatic ignition, if so where is the connection situated? as its location is beyond me.

Problem is the cooker has been fitted prior to a protruding cupbrd front being fixed, so to remove it would mean destroying the cupbrd front adjacent to it, as it is in an " L " shape orientation, and the back of the cooker has limited access.

At present I am using it with manual lighting which isnt a problem, but as the cooker has the oportunity to use auto ignition, it seems a shame not to be able to use it .

The instructions also state you should use a regulator of 28mb with a flow rate of 1.5kg/h but the only regulator I can find is 28mb but with a 1.0kg/h which is a standard low pressure one . Will this make any difference to the working of the cooker?

Any help would be gratefully received as usual, and I am sure there will be other questions as time goes by on other issues.

The joys of changing boats ? it is like opening a can of worms, so many unknowns.

The connection is on the backpanel low down, it is a simple strip connector, you will certainly need access to the back of the cooker to make the connection.

i think the connection block is at the rear bottom left corner when viewed from the front, you will almost certainly need to remove the cooker to get at it and my guess is that when you do the ignition wont work as the spark generators do not like the marine enviroment. the only manual i could find does state that you should fit a regulator capable of supplying 1.5 kg/hr however the max rating for your cooker seems to be less than 700 grms/hour (i must say though that the cooker must be installed "as per manfuctures instructions") if you check the Calor gas online shop they have a marine gas section and should be able to supply the correct regulator. I prefer to use calor propane at a supply pressure of 37mbar and this has the advantage that it still performs well at low ambient temperatures (so you can still have a brew in the yard in January) but as with either butane or propane you need proper storage vented to overboard.

smev manual

I can confirm that the electric connection is bottom left as you look at it. The cooker is great but the instruction and installation 'manual' ( just a couple of sheets of photocopied paper ) are rubbish !!

SMEV are, I think, a French outfit. This could be the reason for the poor instructions. As far as I am aware, the French don't need instructions to use a cooker !

it may be that this model doesnt have electric ignition
i have a 4 burner without & just "acquired" a 4 burner for spares that does have ignition & the block connector is plain to see as described previously.
mine is now 12 yrs old & as good as new

Thanks chaps for all your replies, I have again looked at the back of the cooker with a mirror, and although some of you have said that the connection is on he lefthand side at the bottom at the back , on my cooker the back panel is a compleately flat sheet of stainless steel with only a hole visable 1" or so up from the bottom at the left hand side.
I can only assume that mine does not have a conection block unless you have to remove the whole of the back of the cooker to get to it in the area of the hole, but I would of thought that if this was an access hole for electrics it would have a rubber gromet fitted in it to prevent chafe from the hole sides. I think I will have to carry on using a gas lighter. If any of you have a photos of the conection block on the back of the cooker I would be very interested to see it?

Smev Cooker Help

Thanks Sailorman for the photos, they confirm that I must have a cooker without electric ignition as I don't have a petzio ignighter at the side of the burner head. Mine just has the, what I assume is the gas valve fail safe type thermo coupling.

Thanks once again to all who contributed to my question for help.
