Re: And cue Solitare...............NM.

What you need is a whole bunch of volunteer forumites to bomb in and out of the SSC, doing naughty things. Then you can haul us over and remonstrate loudly on radio about what we are doing wrong. Teaching by example tactic.

On second thoughts, you'll probably get enough people to remonstrate loudly without us doing it on purpose! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Agree esp. when wind over tide and mucho big stuff moving fast(ish) to maintain steerage in strong winds etc.

The first time I entered I nearly pooped the pants....

Very confused sea , swell all over the place , plus lots and lots of traffic and then Pride of Whereever and ArK Royal in the channel.

Nearly turned around and went back to Swanwick!

Robih - I have watched this thread grow over the last few days and seen much very sensible comment. Sadly not all the 40,000 or so small boat owners in the Solent are good seaman (though a remarkably large number are) and the situation you report in the SBC is not uncommon.

LNTM 6/04 is the third revision of the harbour entry rules in three years with each one improving upon its predecessor. 6/04 attempts to address the particular problem you encountered by recommending that vessels leave Ballast Buoy to Port on both entry and exit. Of course this only works if everybody knows the rule and this year the Harbour Patrol Launch will be joined by two new Volunteer Harbour Patrol Launches to get the message across.

Even this of course will not solve every problem and there will still be many occasions where you are faced by poor seamanship and must then call upon your own judgement to do as best as you can. I think you were correct to stand on (and perhaps slow down and sound five short blasts) in the situation you describe.

Of course you could have taken details of the yacht and sent me an electronic incident report. This helps me monitor what is going on and I would encourage all mariners when frightened to fill in the form and press send.

Thank you for generating this debate and have a great summer's sailing.

All the best

Just like to say that it's great when people such as yourself take to the forums actively. It would be nice if some of your peers would join in, so please encourage them if you are in contact with them.

Very interesting and informative post.

Who would have used 5 short blasts in circumstances like this? I admit that it would not have even crossed my mind.

There has to be something done about the throng of stick merchants who appear to have been taught from early childhood that they have right of way in every situation. I've given five hoots or more when struggling in a narrow chanel with one engine down and had kids in dinghys demanding right of way. Even whilst fishing, doing 2 knots I've had rag and stick boats catching up and panicking because I was in there way. No thought of changing course even one degree from three miles back. This mind set of right of way just has to be changed. Ok Ive got 400HP some have more. But it's no help if no where to go!!

Same in Chichester all dinghies expect everyone else to get out the way. They even buzz us as we try to access the marina lock gate.
I e-mailed the Harbour master with the details and sail number of the crew that nearly put me aground and got no reply. I sent a copy to the chichester sailing club sec. no reply. I fear mobo owners are very far down the list of getting any respect for thier right to use the harbour

Might be worth popping into the HM's office in Itchenor - the personal approach sometimes works wonders. Can't see why MoBo's should be at the bottom of the list after all you do pay your harbour dues (don't you????????) and have as much right to be in the harbour as any one else. I used to find that, if the transgressor was part of a race, a short, sharp word with one of the safety boat crews went down well.

In Pompy, as has been said before, use the Incident Report form on QHM's web site.

Tom,

Thanks for the response which is very helpful. What is your website address? Presumably the Notices to Mariner's are on there?
