Another c'nundrum.... for the mechanical engineers among us.

I'm fabricating a tubular bowsprit along the lines of the Selden product.

The alloy tubing I have is 82mm o/diameter, in T6061 anodised, with a wall thickness of 3mm. I'll use a Selden bow bracket and I calculate that could see a maximum load of about 9.8Kn/2200lbf, using UnSupportedLoad (USL) and DistanceBetweenSupports (DSL) guidance from Selden's catalogue.
I'm considering 'sleeving' this in way of the forward Selden bow bracket, over a length of about 300mm, using similar tubing. This will need to be slit to permit application.

The question? Is it likely to provide more support fitted 'Internally' or 'Externally'?

If you slit the tube, it has to be fitted internally. You also need to cut the slit accurately so that it closes fully when you press the reinforcement into your bowsprit. If it's outside, it will simply open up if you load it.
