Whilst sailing is generally considered a very relaxing activity, its a bit like drinking alcohol - sometimes one can get so relaxed its difficult to walk properly. In other words, the winding down, the physical exertion of pulling on string, stress of taking responsibility as a skipper, and all the sea air can be very tiring.

After a long weekend sailing, it can be quite difficult to get back to work on a Monday morning.

Take another hypothetical situation. You've just spent 10 days on the boat in the West Country with lovely wife and enthusiastic daughters. They take the car back home and you sail back to the Solent single handed, setting off late at night.

You encounter Fastnet racers going the other way and Mobo's squeezing between you and major navigational buoys, but you get back to base safe and sound by mid afternoon on Sunday ..... proud but knackered.

Is is it acceptable to skive work on the Monday? Or even drag it in to Tuesday?

Isn't British industry grinding to a halt due to such a lax attitude? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Perfectly acceptable. Throw a sickie and stop whinging.
British industry grinding noise is not related to attitude or its laxity , more from investment starvation of the owners usually. Boat Owners are of course exempt from judgement, because they own boats.

It\'s certainly not acceptable

Unless you think nothing of stealing from your employer.

Actually I did work some of Monday!!

The night sail was fantastic, very dark initially because there was no moon so had to go out on radar until clear of the coast, cloud cleared and a wonderful starlit sky. Fine reach on F4/5 lying back in cockpit watching for shooting stars or admiring the phosphorescence. Abeam of Portland as a blood red sun rose behind it. Came in through Needles and paassed the first of the Fastnet fleet just past Yarmouth just as the tide turned. Wonderful experience and felt privileged to be alone on the sea off the Dorset coast on such a lovely morning.

Sounds like an amazing sail.

A bit off-topic but I'm intrigued about your insurance. Did you have to pay extra to be able to do overnight single-handing or did it come as part of the overall package?

As my employer makes large profits by paying well below market rates, I consider it to be no more than correcting an imbalance

I thought that all of you did your wind-down on Monday morning by subscribing to the forum anyway. I thought of sending in a post on Sunday, but hardly anyone was on line. But Monday, there were loads of peeps logged on.

But to return to night sailing, Richard describes one of his most memorable nights when there were dolphins playing round the boat in a huge patch of phosphorescence, which was really quite beautiful. It looked like they were leaving vapour trails in the water.
Pity he didn't call me on deck. I would love to have seen that.

And I'm actually a contractor so only get paid for the hours I actually work..

What are you doing working for him/her then? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

A contract is a contract. Your choice. Why not get yourself a decent job and do it honestly?

Oh how I love the internet!

Sorry Jimi, I wish I hadn't started this thread. I wasn't expecting a lecture from anybody lacking a sense of humour

Its so predictable! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Quite a few years back now I was late getting back from the CI’s, due to misreading the fuel sight gauge /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif and a lack of wind we spent about 7or 8 hours drifting 20 miles or so off of Portland Bill.
At 9 on Monday morning, before mobiles, I made a ‘ship to shore’ call to let my office know that I wouldn’t be in till Tuesday. They weren’t best pleased, they thought I was just swaning around enjoying myself /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Definately skive the Monday- it's proven to be very dangerous to get back into a car and travel at speeds in excess of 5-10mph without retraining and acclimatisation. the brain just can't handle it, so if nothing else, it's a health and safety issue, if not occupational health recommendation.

There is always at least one on the forum, I just ignore them completely when they crawl out. "You only live once" is one of my favourite sayings and I use it to more-or-less justify anything I want to do. From my recollection most employers do not insist on recompensing you for any time you work outside contracted hours, and certainly not for the times when you think about a work problem/situation outside work hours.
I never ever worked on my birthday. You have to set yourself standards and principles and then live up to them. IMHO. Paul
PS. I find it more relaxing to go to the boat Thursday night/Friday and return home sometime on Monday.

Re: It\'s certainly not acceptable

I think you are quite right. I became self employed years ago for the same reasons. Bosses want to pay nothing for your skill while you work for them. Change it around and its very gratifying to say NO. I will not do it on your terms, and if you dont like it tough. I allways have enough work on boats because I dont abiuse my position and I will only work for owners I get on with!
