skiing question (not boats)

Having spent the last 3yrs skiing at UK half term, I can safely say I will never do it again. Why not leave it until end of term (3rd/4th week March?) when its likely to be sunnier and less crowded. Also, with all this global warming caused by you blatting down the autoroutes at unfeasable speeds in your Merc, the season's seem to be getting later and March seems to offer better snow conditions now than mid Feb
As for booking in advance, whilst this may be a bit of an adventure for a couple, do you really want to drive all night, pitch up in a ski resort and spend all day traipsing around tourist offices searching for the last accomodation which is only available because its the crappiest and 3km walk from the nearest lift whilst your kids are mutinying and SWMBO vows she'll never speak to you again and thats before you have your first row on the piste because you forgot her sunglasses/suncream/hat/googles/liftpass/ski poles(delete as applicable). Been there and got the T shirt
BTW, apparently there are on average 300 people killed a year in the Alps pursuing alpine sports so your strategy of following the blood wagon might work

I would echo these points....
If you are going for the skiing you don't want to be faffing about sorting accomadation
bit like trailboating to Spain without any arrangements as to where you are going to put the boat - takes more than the edge of things!
I would also highlight the fact that you are on a loose / loose - if the conditions are good a hell of a lot of people are going to make the last minute decision to go - and many will have a few hundred miles start on you etc - if they are really crap you will probably find somewhere...
The alternative is to go somewhere unaffected by our holiday periods and short term European conditions.........Banf, Whistler, Aspen all spring to mind. Might find it tough to drive though, but the overall journey experience can be similar - and you can start drinking a hell of a lot sooner!

Or you can always try Glenshee. It was -27.5 last time I was there in 1982. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Or why not...

...stay at Porthmadog (no doubt Dave Snelson can advise about accommodation, and buy you a pint at the Yacht Club) and go to the dry ski slope at Rhiu Goch (?Sp?). It's conveniently located close to Trawsfyndd, so everyone glows in the dark, thus facilitating night-time skiing.

All this and sheep, too........... ;-)

Re: yeah but

From what I've heard (from my father) and seen on the TV. England has been colder, wetter, snowyer, then here. Weve been going through a drought period here with lack of rain. Yachts from the yacht club were out sailing Boxing Day.

Yes and the 'rollmopps' as you call them, now come in lots of different dressings. To me, one of the great 'finds' over here. In fact I find the food on the most part very English. Boiled beef and carrots. Good solid stuff. Not your 'ponsee' mess about 'foreign' stuff you how getting there.

Yes there are pump out stations, if you need them.

And the waters drinkable. I only get a 'jippy' stomach how when I go back to the UK and drink the 'lime scale' thats been passed for the second or third or forth time!

Ooops, that seemed to upset the viewer.... well..

Site is in Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, German and French (obviously do not expect English speaking people) :-))

The houses get's booked up really early and prices varies witht the season. We have selected an early season, which is outwith the Norwegian winter vacations, hence the low price. Not sure what's available, but is close to Knaben Ski lifs and the Krågeland Ski Centre, which is just fine for my daughter who is just really starting to ski... <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.fedrelandsvennen.no/vinterguiden/alpin/krakel.htm>http://www.fedrelandsvennen.no/vinterguiden/alpin/krakel.htm</A>
