The windlass doesnt want to play properly and I need to remove the "Socket Screw" in the end of the gypsy to get to the pawls.

The manual refers to a Socket Screw Key, which I am guessing is simply an allen key - I cant actually see in to be sure. 6mm is too small and 8mm is too big, and of three allen key sets, none has a 7mm.

Anybody know what this mysterious key actually is?

Try Imperial Allen keys. Several bits of kit that I have use USA fastenings, even though bought in Europe. Worst of all are tubing connectors, angles, etc for bimini and hood frames. My old SL Seawolf windlass in UK definitely uses Imperial keys.

Thanks Cliff and Vyv - I think 8/32" is more likely !

Isn't 8/32" actually 1/4" ?

When I needed a 7mm allen key in the 1980's when 7mm was a Ford dealer only special tool, I just ground down a 5/16" one. VW had a similar special tool trick in the late 1970's, a 3.5 mm allen key needed for the points !
