Before I start I know this is probubly a realy stupid idea/question but I am gonna do it anyway.

I have a 29 foot twin outdrive sealine that I keep on a drying pontoon mooring on the Itchen, the ground is quite thickly covered in mud/slime and i am not too worried about the boat drying out I actualy find it quite useful as I can keep an eye on things below and do some tinkering with the legs etc. The issue I have is that I can not get full acces to the underside of the boat and the drive legs while they are burried in a thick layer of smelly mud so when I have major bits to do I have to get the boat lifted. One other lesser issue is that the boat never sits totally level and there the bottom of the hull digs through the mud to the shingle below it erodes the anti foul very quickly.

To my point, I have seen the fancy floating boat stands that keep the boat totaly out of the water, great idea but a little over the top I think, what I was wondering was if it is possible to fix a boat dolly type stand to the bottom, next to the pontoon for the boat to drop onto as the tide goes down. What are your thoughts, am I being totaly mad, would it be impossibly to make the boat drop reliably into place, would I wreck my boat, would it be impossible to make/source such a thing, would it cost the earth (poor NHS employee here) or am I onto a fantastic money and boat saving idea???

PS thanks for all the kind offers I had from people offering to sort out my reverse lock bar a couple of weeks back, a mate at work new a mate wiv a mate that could and he did it for the grant cost of £8, which is better that the £700 VP wanted!!

Well why not construct some sort of cradle that the boat sits in, they have them in some of the drying harbours.

However I do think this may look rather odd on a pontoon berth. If the hard ground below the mud erodes the anti foul then surely it will also rub off any growth? So it really shouldn't matter?

You have a good point with the scrubbing any muck off as it does a grand job of that but I would still like to get full access that and the areas of the hull that do touch the mu get covered in these horrid little calcium tubes wiv worms in (technical term!!!)

sounds like a good use for a (very) old tralier - ps take the wheels off first.

not sure the neighbours would like the idea, may look a bit like some scrap next to the mooring, mind you so would my stand I guess! Keep the ideas coming!! I am having these silly ideas because I am excited about getting my toy back in the water a week tommorrow!!!

Seems like you know whats req'd to lift your boat clear, why not design and mess about with your idea, (which is excellent btw) then retire and make a fortune off the back of it /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

thanks for the encouragement, just a little bit lost as where to start and worries it will be a waste of time but hey ho, nothing ventured and all that! Maybe I will make it a summer project, I amay be about to embark on a bit of a steep learning curve on fiber glass and teak decking!! Hmm, I feel another post coming on!!

Serious mate, something to float yer boat onto,...and then drag it up onto the hard stuff has got to be a winner.
Teak and Fibreglass been done.....one costs a fortune and the other makes ya itch! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

well I am out to prove the expensive bit wrong, I have managed to find a friendly boat builder friend who is willing to help me make new engine hatches to replace my rotting ply ones (standard 1989 sealine) and lay teak decking in the cockpit, all for the price of the wood/fible glass and a weeks free labour from me to help on other jobs he has on. I am not quite sure he knows what he has let himself in for yet being a total boat building novice, but they do say I am good with my hands :o)

I have seen the commercial speedboats in Looe (shaftdrive ,heavily built boats of about 27ft) on wooden cradles that seem to float ,with four uprights one at each corner to tie mooring lines to.They have used them for as long as I can remember ,late 1950s ----present .Would have thought it fairly easy to construct one to suit your boat with a bit of thought or a friendly local chippie.
