Silly Question: can I go sailing next week when the weather settles down?

Forecast for next week is looking quite nice really, parky but doable.

Boat is in Southampton area which is going from Tier 2 to 4 after Boxing Day, home is elsewhere but same move from Tier 2 to 4.

I'll have the pup with me (we're a lifelong bubble!) but no-one else.

Am I allowed to drive down and go sailing for a few days?

Sadly not, nights away from home are forbidden. There are a few possible loopholes in the unlikely event you’re caught but they may not be worth the hassle.

That said, if you’re planning to anchor somewhere out of the way, you’ll be about as isolated as you possibly can be without shooting yourself into space. So personally I‘d count that as one of the “specific and limited ways” of breaking the law that this government are so fond of.

Visiting a marina is not on, obviously.

If both boat and house in Tier 4 area without needing to cross other tier areas to get there then probably no problem going to boat for allowed "unlimited exercise alone" What the new Tier 4 means for sport and physical activity in England | Sport England and you used to be able to travel as far as you need to do exercise. As usual guidance is vague but if you only have one boat that's the minimum necessary you need to travel to get there

"outdoor recreation or exercise. This should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel a short distance within your Tier 4 area to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space)" Tier 4: Stay at Home No definition of what is short given but I imagine if they want to throw the book at someone they'll say you should assume that to mean getting to your local park. Once in your car bubble can't see what difference 10 minutes or 60 minutes makes but that might just be me.

Staying away from home overnight
You cannot leave your home or the place where you are living for holidays or overnight stays unless you have a reasonable excuse for doing so. This means that holidays in the UK and abroad are not allowed. This includes staying in a second home or caravan, if that is not your primary residence. This also includes staying with anyone who you don’t live with unless they’re in your support bubble. You are allowed to stay overnight away from your home if you:
  • are unable to return to your main residence
Tier 4: Stay at Home
"It was the tides governor"

I think the most they would try to fine you initially is 100 pounds so its not that risky to test this out. Try not to need the RNLI though or you might get in the papers as a "covidiot" recklessly spreading covid to a deserted estuary RNLI rescue covidiots after grounding catamaran despite lockdown

NB I'm not a lawyer or offering legal advice ;)

Thanks for the sit-rep folks. Its my own fault for being so happily isolated that I no longer have a clue what's happening beyond the garden hedge! ?

No point in going looking for trouble... and at least I've still got loads of work to do on building my latest seagoing boat!

Merry Christmas everyone! ?

That looks like plenty of entertainment

I think this is the latest from the RYA and seems like a green light to me https://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/clubs/Covid FAQs in England from Dec 2nd 2020.pdf

If you do go I strongly advise printing that off and taking it with you. If you are stopped you might be able to avoid getting a fixed penalty fine by showing it to the police which is far better than trying to challenge a fine later which could result in a criminal record if you lose.

I can't see anything about not staying overnight this time only that guest houses etc have to close to all but essential workers or other exceptions. If you are continuously on your boat that is just continuing the unlimited exercise IMO though opinions could vary and some will see it as visiting a second home.

Scroll down to the Staying away from home overnight’ in this Government link re Tier 4.

On the face of it a sailing hol would be skating on very thin ice - possibly literally if forecast is right ?

Ah yes thanks I'd found it and edited it while you were typing that i guess. Might be a bit conspicuous being the only boat out but i doubt anyone will be there to enforce it either

One positive from being in tier 4 is that day of the nicest weather for a while we are 'excused' from the Christmas visits.

Hopefully off to the boat shortly.

Weather looking rather interesting Sunday morning

But will the boatyards and marinas be open ? I thought rightly or wrongly none essential businesses had to close in tier 4.

Thanks for this. The key thing for me seems to be here: "If you live in a tier 4 area, or if your boat is located in a tier 4 area, you may not stay overnight onboard other than for legally permitted reasons (for example it is your main residence)."
Alone on your own boat. Could be a perfect crime

this from the RYA which is practically as good as the Queen giving it a thumbs up

Tier 4: "Sailing club / boat parks and marinas can open for individual exercise, and for people to use with others within their household, support bubble, or with one person from another household." https://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/clubs/Guidance on what is possible in each English tier.pdf

Season’s Greetings!

Its an 8ft tender for the mothership (see picture on left), will fit capsized between the mast and inner forestay for offshore passages. Will be making oars for organic propulsion. Could make a wee standing-lug rig for it, but its too small really and that's not its main purpose... so afterwards I'll build a traditional Shetland 15ft double-ender for proper sailing... and show pictures of my fleet to everyone else's wives!!

Also bear in mind that if the OP is thinking of landing on the Island then that's a no-no as they are moving to T3 as is Lymington and Beaulieu. It is not permitted to travel from a T4 into a T3 area.

You can go from T4 to T3 for a great many reasons, one of which is exercise and recreation. I wouldn't sail to the island as there are other places to go, but it's not illegal.
