Well,

What a weird day we have just had. We set off to review boats and see if SWMBO fancied any. We had kind of discussed that we should go for a 30ft boat and spend up to £110k if poss (including ours). The first boats we reviewed were aquadors but although SWMBO loved the 26HT, she felt it was still too small and I thought £106k (including boatshow discount) was a bit steep even for an Aquador so I did not press on.

Realising that this next boat would only last us 3/4 years I wanted to stick to those brands which have good resale in the UK. So we headed off to Sealine, Jeanneau and Doral. We first looked at the S29 which would of been great if we could fit through the Heads and rear cabin doors (not for those on the heavy side) and also she did not like the SC29 as the roof looked to ugly for SWMBO, so that was off the list. Next we reviewed the New Prestige 30. I loved the boat but SWMBO was still not keen, and at £135k it was more than we wanted to spend so we left that. Last was the Doral 280 Prestancia. SWMBO was quite keen on this and we thought it might be the one. We had a long chat with an Essex Salesman, highlighted our past affiliation and then had a private chat together. SWMBO was concerned how fast we might grow out of it and so I agreed that it was possible to get a 35ft boat new, but not till start of 2008. So we headed off to compare what we could get.

First up Doral 330 Elegante, which was lovely but pricey given that it was an open plan cabin. So we headed off to Bavaria where we liked the 35HT. Only issue was fit out of Cockpit (felt cheap) and price at £179k. However with Hagling soon got them down to £158 fully loaded with good (fair PX) so added that to the list. Next went to see Sealine S34. SWMBO loved it, and was very keen to do a deal there and thewn /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. So I spoke to the Sales Lady and was amazed to find out the Sales price at Boatshow was £179k! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif No discounts were coming and when I asked about PX she shruged and walked off. In absolute amazement at both price and no PX we walked off the stand and, as we were leaving, the lady casually stated that we should sell ours first then come back and talk prices! Peters are not selling Fairlines now, they were Sealines but I was amazed at the attitude and price! (the boat is 10 years oid and hardly updated). My wallet breathed a sigh of relief though...£179k..WTF! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So next off to Cranchi (an old favourite of Mine). It was the first time SWMBO had seen an Z34 with wood interior and she loved it. They came up with a great price straight away £155k fully loaded and offered a good PX. Well done Cranchi and Abersoch land and sea (port solent office). That was added to the list. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Last was the Prestige 34HT. This, taking all into account, was my favourite and SWMBO was quite taken with it. The Spec we wanted was exactly the same as the Boatshow boat. The boatshow price for that spec was £158k....and they offered us the ex showboat at £152k so not a bad or great deal. I felt we could tweak it a little so asked about PX. We got low sale price minus brokerage fees offered (about 10k than we had paid 3 months ago on a 50k boat) This annoyed me so we walked off. (it is still on the list but only for a better deal as it is the smallest boat). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So we then ended up with a choice. Go for the Doral 280 there and then or wait 12 months and get a 1) Zaffiro 34, 2) Prestige 34 or 3) Bav 35HT. So back to Doral to do a deal on the 280........

and for the first time they let us down. Having told us of the great boatshow deals they offered us £2k less for the current boat than we bought it for (they had intoned we would get the money back if we bought a new one) and then basically 1/2 the price of the extras we put on it, so no price discount and Extras at cost! It worked out at £122k for the Doral.....and they were not keen on budging...so we walked away. The irony is that if the deal was right we would have bought as we wanted to stay loyal to Essex. Unfortunately they thought we were money bags so we walked away. The loyalty bond is now gone. We will look at 2nd hand Z34, Prestige 34HT over the winter and see if there is a deal to be done. If not it will be back to SIBS next year to try and spend our Cash, and essex scored an own goal.

AWARDS
Bavaria for fastest drop in price (11%) only a Silver Star as the Quality looked poor but they were keen.
Sealine a brown smelly gong for worst Sales team and Pricing (lost the plot) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Essex and Doral a Smaller Brown/bronze gong for losing a sale over a few grand (when he had told us how much margin was in it to drop) and then did not go to it, or even try.
Cranchi and Abersoch a Gold Star for being straight forward and Honest and having the best product at the best price.
Jeanneau a bronze star for trying a lot and good service, but having a sale lost through being tight on PX and Discount on Display boat....it had Largest Engines D4 260 which no one else wanted???

So I still have my trusty little Aquador and our deposit stays in the bank for a few more months. I expect to see record sales figures as we could not spend our cash.....

The End

Re: not quite the end

I was tempted by a Targa 30 a while back, then they dropped it.

Then, I liked the Targa 34, then they dropped that too.

Now the cheapest Targa 38 is, what, £220k ???

Ever thought about writing articles for MBM? This sort of article deserves to be in a mag to counter the advertorial stuff that usually appears.

BTW - Cranchi - do the deal coz they are also the best built boats. No cored hulls here! Does that make a difference? Yeah, I think so, coz 1) you have more confidence in a hull lay-up that is roven matt rather than CSM (chopped strand matt) and 2) any future surveyor that is used in the sale knows that fact.

Nice account - thanks

The S29 has a good hull too, using a vacuum bagged layup which if done properly, produces a very strong hull.

This doesn't apply to the S34, which is the usual CSM stuff: a bit more thickness is needed to get the same hull strength, it's important to get consistent thickness, but the upsides (not often quoted by mfrs that use mat and hand layup) are lower chance of voids, bubbles, osmosis etc. In any case, a lot of the strength is in the framing system - bulkheads and stringers, which on Cranchis are particularly brick outhouse-like...

Sounds like my perfect boat would be the hull of a Bavaria or Cranchi, the interior fit out of a Sealine, exterior styling by Fairline, and the price tag of a Bayliner /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers Dave,

I will be interested in other peoples opinions of service and sale styles. The proof, will however be in the Sales figures. I did not want them to give the boats away, but I know most large manufacturers give very good incentives to dealers at SIBS so that they can fill their build books over the winter months and keep some cash flow. Obviously Sealine do not need to sell and S34 as they are making and selling lots of more profitable (at £179k? boats)

Cheers

Surely the best time to buy any boat wether new or used from dealer/broker is during the fag end of the year poss late December when all memory of summer sales has ebbed totally away and the prospect of a least 4 months or dire weather and an empty sales office is in prospect.
Always buy your boat with at the very least a hard frost on the hard standing or if possible a 6" layer of snow.A biting easterly wind also helps no end.December is only 8 weeks away.

Sealine seem to prefer it when the thing you are chopping in is, errm, another Sealine. Also, with Sealine, it pays to make sure you know which dealer you are dealing with. Then you can go to another boat, make sure it's a different dealer, start talking about the boat you want, and compare figures. You might get some strange looks if you wind up in the hospitality area three times with three different hosts, so a more subtle approach is required.

This year they tried to "allocate" a dealer to me, probably to try and prevent the above, but it can still be done.

Incidentally, Prossers have got an almost new (2006) S34 for £149k. It has the smaller engines (KAD32's) but still should be good for 30kts plus:

I'll take 2! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Paul, Seems we have similar tastes, my boat is identical to the one you saw except they have put a couple of mustard coloured inserts into the seat backs in the cockpit of the 2007 model which would have put swmbo off, as she was already criticising the off white seat colour (working man's club smokey ceiling colour,...I think /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif), the rest is identical. We also have the flexi teak deck throughout on ours that makes it even more stunning and saves you having to wear your sunglasses 24/7 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The hull design of the Cranchi is superb, no slamming and a good and real top speed of 39/40 knts if required with the twin D4 260hp. You also get the privacy of the twin cabins and great build quality, we are off to Genoa to look at the new 43 hardtop, but I must say the silver mouldings on the newer models make them look like a Zanussi advert /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We had a good chat with Princess regarding the new Princess V45, I got all the details and build dates, I would just like to see one in the flesh first. Anyway there may be a stunning second hand FULLY loaded Z34 on the market soon, so keep your eyes peeled /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good luck with your hunt.

Cash flow from SIBS carries through to December, cash flow from LIBS takes you to the season, (hopefully), though of course what you say is true for private sellers.

Nautorious, that was a very interesting read. Its always fascinating to see how other peeps treat the buying process in particular peeps who make buying decisions at boat shows. Personally, I would'nt trust myself to make a decision at the show itself as I would be too dazzled by white grp and free booze. Did you go to the show with a good idea of what your shortlist was or did you go with a completely open mind? Would you have signed on the bottom line if somebody had presented you with the right deal at the show or would you have still mulled it over afterwards before making a decision?
Thanks for sharing your experience

Hi Mike,

I went on Sunday without SWMBO and made a short list. Came home and researched Second hand prices and checked out old MBM's for previous deals on the new craft. Came up with a budget (probable) worked out how much if pushed we could go to and then set off with SWMBO. Overall there was about 5 weeks work going into the decision. ( a lifetimes being a boat spotter and 4 years on here!)

So we were ready and able to buy. Obviously I kept off the booze all day (had one Guiness..and kept SWMBO off champers!). We even dressed down for the day so as not to raise suspicions. Had it all planned and then it was down to SWMBO. Unfortunately it just did not pan out. Got to say sales must have been good as we left our details with all possible boat salesman, and only Cranchi have got back to us. I know the rest are still at SIBS but a little follow up might help!

Quite sad actually. I only ever bought one boat brand new before at a boat show before (Earls Court) and strugled to spend my cash there as well! I have tried to buy at two others with no luck.

On reflection I was asking too many proper questions, querying the salesmans advice and contradicting their rubbish where spoken. The best one was the Doral salesman who implored that the mercruiser diesels had better resale and so was best to go for. When I highlighted they had a similar boat to the one I was buying in Stock, had reduced it 20k and still could not get rid of it he got the hump and 'humped' my deal!

I just suppose that I should nod, take their word for it and give them my cash as I am sooo lucky to be able to buy off them!

A sad day I thought, and will now retack to the second hand market for the winter.

Cheers

Paul /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Paul, amazing that nobody would actually sit down and do a deal with you. What are boat shows for? I suspect that, as you have already mentioned, they'll all be a lot more desperate come mid Dec
