Shotley

Current advertised offer for Shotley is for free berthing for newcomers until the end of their current contract, provided that they pay upfront for the year 2017

I've already discussed this with John (Pipe) and am meeting him on Friday to discuss options....

Thanks for all the input everyone. I think I'm swayed but will decide over the weekend :)

Be sorry to see you go if you do. Can't say as I've noticed any negative change in atmosphere as a result of the couple of staff changes although I do miss Toby and family

John Pipe is a super guy as are all the lock Masters and admin staff; always willing to help if they can.

Like others here we love the location and are in our 7th year. On the East Coast it is to me the best location you van get out in almost any weather for a tootle up the rivers if a run out to sea would be a little bouncy. The lock bothers some people but really it is friendly (nice soft fendering to bounce off of :) ) you know when peak times are going to be so either avoid that hour or so or wait, as others have said two locks is the maximum we have ever waited. We don't hang around when called in always have fenders etc rigged and ready and get in as quick as is practicable knowing others are waiting.

Always something going on at Shotley given the commercial traffic moving.

We are on G Pontoon behind the visitors Linear.

Thanks for the thought Bru, but as we will still, I presume, have rights at NF for the next 9 months, It becomes a free destination and I do enjoy the Magners Pear (when they've got it) in the Ferry Boat.... This is our 8th year and third boat at NF and we just want a change of options and view....

Cor, two moorings eh? Nearly as bad as two boats. (Ah!)

I can see the attraction of Shotley and also the attraction of a chance of scenery although I doubt we'll be going anywhere anytime soon!

Good luck with it

The thing about Shotley is that those who have a berth there love it, personally I don't, I dislike the lock and on the times we've been there have had to wait an hour to get in and almost the same to get out. I would dislike the stress of the lock if it was my regular base as well. I also didn't like being right by the docks with the constant noise and fumes. I thoroughly dislike the drive from Ipswich and certainly never managed it in 15 minutes! I always got caught behind slow drivers. 18 months at Foxs I grew to really like the journey on the river, it was relaxing after a hard slog from Dover and we did several day sails just up to Harwich and back. But what do I know because I've never heard a bad word about it from a bertholder.

We came from a swinging mooring and initially found the lock stressful. All too quickly it becomes second nature and we navigate it almost on autopilot.

Erm..... you wouldn't hear a bad word from a bertholder, if a bertholder didn't like it here he'd move, then he wouldn't be a bertholder. :)

Has anyone else at Shotley ever noticed soot deposits on decks from the continually running container ship engines? We had one of our work boats down there for a fortnight and it was my job to clean it when it came back. Not excessive but definitely noticeable.

Can't say i have really. Been in marinas in towns where the traffic pollution made the boat dirty. Spent a night in London once, boat was black.

Also, can't say i notice noise from Felixstowe neither.

Yes, there is airborne pollution. And some noise pollution, depending on wind direction again.

Back in the 70/80's I crewed for a Hunter 32 out of Maldon and Shotly, always worried me that the Gents Mirrors were surrounded by those " Actors Make up lights" normally only seen in Theatre dressing rooms and Ladies Loos.

Never seen them anywhere else, including Berthon in Lymington, whose Gents loos do seem a bit 'metrosexual', Mirrors everywhere!

Rather contrary to the Essex machismo exuding from those in the bars and pub down the road.

We like to spend a night at Berthon during the season to experience how the other half live. At Bucklers Hard at the moment, lovely place but they still have those horrible shower curtains that cling to you like a shroud as soon as it gets the slightest contact.

So, you frequent Ladies toilets :disgust:.

PS the velux rooflights in the mens toilet after dark, leave nothing to the imagination :o

We were Shotley based just after we had our deck done.
After one year, the deck certainly didn't look renewed anymore.
Soot on deck was one of the reasons we didn't stay - along with: the lock, the trip from Ipswich to Shotley (which we never managed in 15 minutes). Also, we found ourselves stuck in the mud in our berth quite a few times.

On the plus side: friendly and helpful staff.
