Yes indeed, animals aren't allowed in food prep or serve areas, but the food hygiene people don't have anything against them in food consumption areas. Which is why I avoid non dog friendly eateries as they're using the food reg's as an excuse to exclude something which isn't a problem. Lots of places realise this and allow dogs in who behave, the only dogs excluded are those that don't behave. It's running around that causes dog hairs to fly, so a well behaved dog isn't a problem any more than a well behaved child, or adult come to that

Lots of places make the mistake of going too far with not allowing animals in, lots more people choose carefully where they go so their dog can get in. There's all sorts of dog friendly websites out there, sites that dog owners check to see if they'll be allowed in. Excluding a dog puts lots of people off, same as making an entire area or the grounds of a place non smoking. I avoid anti dog and anti smoking places like the plague, same as a parent would avoid anti kid places

I don't know whether anyone actually answered the original inquiry, but have just (last week) eaten at the Shipwreck and much improved. Still slightly pricey, but certainly the food was a lot better, especially the beef burger...a proper and large pure beef.....burger, and not cooked to oblivion. Egg, bacon and cheese or any thereof can be added.
I last ate in the Bristol Arms after reopening after looong closure and it was great. Apparently...I believe...then shut again and has reopened....again. One of my party had eaten there and found it quite acceptable.

As ever the facilities at Shotley were just immaculate, and the staff (lock control) just great.
