Just to change the narrative for a mo. RNLI now being accused of 'sending crews' into a "hazardous situation". Im truly lost for words.

My fortunately limited experience of the RNLI (limited to being on good terms with our local crew) is that after an assessment to minimise that risk, they’d go ahead if there was the smallest prospect of saving someone, no matter what they’d been told to do.

Well, if you want the tinfoil hat version, Facebook troglodytes are saying it was on charter to US Department of Defence ( it is part of the TSP fleet) and the Cargo vessel was hijacked by terrorists linked to Iran. RAF Typhoons spotted overhead .

Well the first part of that was on BBC about 5 hours ago - anchored vessel one of 10 tankers used for fuel for US military.

BBC news now full of concern for "the environment", which I think is quite sad when people may still be missing, and many more have a tough night ahead.

I thought everyone was accounted for, with 1 in hospital, not thought to be life threatening. 50 000 tons of kerosene and 15 drums of sodium cyanide are now the main concern

It was reported earlier that all crew from both vessels were safe and accounted for with 1 in hospital but the ambulance service are now saying none went to hospital

On the contrary, the two matters are not mutually exclusive, and much of the area is of international importance. Even if you don’t car about the matter, it may still have considerable economic ramifications.

Early reports aren't always clear, and I might have mis-heard. I thought the media only confirmed crew of one vessel?

They have a point. The needs of the many in general will tend to outweight the plight of the few. The whole shebang sounds extremely nasty indeed for the local environment. Taking Jet fuel alone, its pretty tenacious stuff, actually one of the hardest volatiles to extinguish, amongst other problems it presents, and Cyanide too? The mind boggles.

Update from tonight - the line of vessels apparently searching was as ominous as it seemed at the time - one crew member of Solong is sadly confirmed as missing.

Massive respect to the professionals today, who immediately rushed into a dangerous situation to render aid and try to save lives. It's been a long hard day for them.

I assume that as with a hazardous road incident, they now know what each was carrying and it’s all nasty stuff and crews in open boats potentially at quite a risk, most likely the sort of environment that the fire brigade would be using breathing equipment.

The 'hitter' is not a big ship, just a lowly feeder container ship.
Registered in Madeira, Portugal's second registry, so probably not a portuguese citizen on board. Probably very spartan manning - maybe just a master and one mate working 6 on 6 off seven days a week for the duration of their contract.
I would suggest fatigue played a part.
A query? Did the tanker try and contact the box boat either by radio or simply by blowing the hooter or was their watchkeeping also a trifle slack.
I await the results of the enquiry.
