It would really be on the upward curve if this country could do as the Dutch do and actually build infrastructure. A tunel under the Thames to Essex would transform the place from a backwater into a very much des-res.

The most grim time of the year was when the local council briefly stopped chasing the locals for non payment of council tax and diverted its attentions to cutting back the verges along the road to Leysdown.
All was revealed, mile apon mile of coke cans,drinks bottles/ old nappies and just about anything that could be forced through a car window on the move.

Well I don't know where you live, but sadly many of the roads in my home county of Kent are pretty much the same!
