For my own pleasure, I take quite a few photos of other yachts whilst at sea and having paid Beken a fair whack for three prints of our yacht that they took speculatively, it seems to me that the owners of the subject yachts might benefit from being able to be sent any such photos that we take of each other in passing.

Is there already a simple way of achieving this? Not all yachts clearly display their yacht club but most have either a name or a GBR number that presumably could be used to find the owners?

Let's see now, Person of criminal intent standing on shore with binoculars reads GBR number /sail number / name / SSR number of yacht, looks up owners name and address and proceeds to go burglarise the property safe in the knowledge that the property owner is away at sea.

I think not. Data Protection Act and all that. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Advertise your service (but not here), post thumbnails of pictures and wait for the owners to contact you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Be wary of photographing other people on their boats - some may take it as an invasion of their privacy. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Yup - agreed nice way to earn a bob or two - your chap ASKED first so no invasion of privacy, see before you buy - good, but tell me what is AU$150 in real money (£)?

Fair point re Data Protection / burglary etc!

I don't have a "service" to advertise - the suggestion that I was making was that its a damn sight cheaper to get photos of your boat if an amateur snapper takes photos and emails them to you gratis, than paying eg Becken for their prints - I paid around £300 for various prints from just three snaps that they took of our yacht last year, and whilst they are good pics and I am pleased with them, I would have been more pleased if someone on another boat had taken them and given me the files to print off myself!

I can't immediately see why anyone would have a problem having their yacht as the subject of a photo taken for private purposes! If for publication, it would need their consent I agree.

Sorry, haven't yet worked out how to post photos or do fancy signature things on this forum - I'm new here!

I think it's an excellent idea, Kitty. What we need is something like BoatOne's gallery. People could post a (sensibly sized) pic with the name of the yacht and the owner could contact them via e-mail for the full gazillion megapixel version.

I would be prepared to set something like this up if people are interested.

In the meantime, if you have a really good picture including a yacht under sail then I am always looking for good shots for the BM monthly calendar wallpaper.

Some while back, a group of forumites in Solent said exactly the same thing, and set up a yahoo group (I think) to exchange details of when and where they would be out at weekend, so snaps could be taken and exchanged. Don't know what happened, haven't heard anything about it for years

I'm with you - I have quite a lot of photos taken of other yachts but being selfish the only yacht I really want a photo of under sail is my own and that is the hardest one to get - v frustrating a few weeks ago off the HOly Loch, not a cloud in the sky and getting a great sail past a motor boat who was up wind and towards the sun around 20 feet away taking photos - if only I could get a copy but no idea who he was!!
